There are some amazing story-tellers out there in the world, on the television, in the newspapers, on social media. Omnipresent narrators with an authoritative command of language and imagery and sound and special effects that wield supreme confidence. Doesn't matter if the stories they tell are largely fictional. They sound and look good so we believe them. We can't help but pay attention and give them credence even if we tell ourselves we don't........

Instead, you have to research and second-guess everything. Triple-guess, even. You have to fact-check the stories and then fact-check the fact-checkers. Everyone's trying to sell you their version of reality—in order to sell something to you, convince you to go along with a narrative, or "nudge" you toward some desired behavior or outcome.

This isn't necessarily a new phenomenon, but never before have the storytellers had such influence while also having so little direct connection to the consumers of the narrative.

And so for this holiday season, this Christmas, or winter solstice, or whichever one you follow, give yourself the license to tell your own story.

Solar is a great story teller but he is also a fact and research kind of guy when it comes to what he knows.  Toy

I was going to write a book, Forever 39,  and  here I am 83 and no book.  Too late now. My life story is long and I believe interesting but no motivation to put it down.

I listen to NPR Saturday nights here with 2 hrs of Stories from some great story tellers.  I look forward to that program.

Thanks but no thanks.  Each time I see my grandkids I attempt to tell them more about  me,  but in the whole scheme of things, it doesn't matter.

In this case I was thinking of the positive stories we all have or maybe stories that taught us something that we found important to our lives.  Something that may either save someone else the pain or at least to know someone else has felt it and understands.

OK, here is a story that was a life changer for me.  Back in mid 70's I went to work for a metals brokerage company.  The company imported metals for the steel, foundry, plating industries while we did all this work in the U.S.  I was a good asst to the boss, he saw that in me and after a couple yrs said "order business cards etc and you are going on the road, outside sales, along with this came a company car.  I said no, I can't do this and he said Yes You Can.  And I did, got into accounts the male force could not get into and it was all up and up believe me.  PA's had to be tired of being pushed by males to "get an order".   

I worked hard but had the energy and desire to do this, traveled the U.S., parts of Canada and into Mexico.  Selling pig iron, foundry coke, zinc, cadmium, mercury (for thermometer making), zircon sands, all metals and products that went into making products.  I was the only woman West of the Mississippi who was doing this work, I had a counterpart in our NYC office and she worked most of the E.C.

I really enjoyed what I was doing, worked hard and after 9 yrs burned out, I had no more blood to give...so I had to leave this rather high paying position for a "woman" in the 70's.  The next job I took had me taking a 40K pay cut..But I was able to do it and can thank my "ulcer causing boss" thanks for the opportunity.  BTW: I never got an ulcer from this job, but the guys said "he" didn't get ulcers, he caused them.   As I said a real life changing experience.  And know also, the more money one makes, the more one spends...  j

I have maybe ten or twenty THOUSAND stories like that. Maybe I can focus on a few that were especially meaningful.

Same here, but in all honesty, even my dumbest mistakes turned out to be gold.
I know, strange, but I wouldn't change a thing. Even my concussion/memory loss turned out to be cause for this forum.

I often wondered if life here is both Heaven and Hell at the same time. For me, it's been Heaven, but for others passing through my life, for them, it was Hell.
