Title: Another Stroke of Genius from Microsoft
Post by: tbone0106 on April 27, 2011, 08:20:41 AM
Now that Windows 7 has a firm foothold in the OS market, Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows XP. They did the same thing with Windows 98 and Me when they noticed that too darn many people were opting not to run out and buy XP. To the credit side, Gates & Co. have already supported XP far longer than they did the old DOS-based OSes. To the debit side, that extended support came about not because of any charitable feeling on Microsoft's part, but because of the abject failure of XP's so-called successor, Windows Vista. No matter how much pressure you bring to bear, it's tough to get folks to abandon an OS that works for one that doesn't, especially when doing so carries a $100+ price tag.

My father-in-law, a die-hard devotee of his beloved Macs, sent me a blurb about a new download available from Microsoft's website. It's a "gadget" that installs on your Windows desktop that counts down the days until support for XP will end. This is dear ol' Microsoft's clever way of encouraging you to abandon your antiquated OS and move up to Windows 7. There's just one little problem...

QuoteSystem Requirements
Supported Operating Systems:Windows 7;Windows Vista
Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit, any edition.

Yeah. The gadget that's designed to prod you to abandon your beloved XP.... won't run on XP.

Sheesh.

Eh, par for the course, but it'd still be a useful tool.  XP doesn't support gadgets at all, not just this one or anything (not to my knowledge anyway).  I'm a sys admin using Win7, and I would love to have a countdown till XP is no longer supported.

I would think that being a Win7 admin.  You could going to Excel and make your own XP count down in Excel.  If they give a departure date for XP.

Well, there you are. Sysadmins using Windows 7 have a use for this gadget.

Hey, kk, how and why is the thing useful to you? Inquiring minds would love to know...
