Title: Texas stores pulling all Blue Bell ice cream as company issues complete recall
Post by: robwin on April 20, 2015, 09:29:25 PM
Oh, my goodness. This is a disaster for the Lone Star state and I doubt it such a good thing for the Blue Bell Co. either. Blue Bell is the best ice cream in the world and it isn't clear how long Texans, and some others, will have to do without. Still I must admit I admire the company greatly for being so thorough in its concerns about its products safety. Very Texan of them.

"Blue Bell Creameries, which has been beset by concerns about Listeria contamination in its ice cream, recalled all its products Monday.

The potentially financially devastating decision came after the iconic Texas brand found the deadly bacteria in yet another product.

Since issuing the first recall in its 108-year history in early March, the Brenham-based company has twice expanded the recall as more items — found on more production lines — tested positive for Listeria.

In a written statement late Monday, Blue Bell said it was voluntarily recalling all products, including "ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and frozen snacks because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes."

"We're committed to doing the 100 percent right thing, and the best way to do that is to take all of our products off the market until we can be confident that they are all safe," Paul Kruse, Blue Bell CEO and president said in the statement. "We are heartbroken about this situation and apologize to all of our loyal Blue Bell fans and customers. ... We want enjoying our ice cream to be a source of joy and pleasure, never a cause for concern, so we are committed to getting this right."

It might help if you were testing for listeria BEFORE you sent the products out for consumption.

We are already suffering withdrawal pains!

Blue Bell is the best in the world.  Believe me, I've tried almost all of them.  Blue Bell is in a league of its own.

And I weep when I pass the empty ice cream shelves in the Supermarket.  Blue Bell made up 90% of the sales of ice cream in Texas!

The big sellers in southeast Michigan are either Stroh's or Hudsonville (a gluten-free outfit). But as for the best-named Michigan-made ice cream, try this one from Ashby Ice Cream. They describe it as: "thick, black-tar fudge in chocolate ice cream with chunks of chocolate asphalt."

What else could it be but Michigan Pothole?

Sounds awesome!  You can't get too much chocolate!

I have spent time in your beautiful State in the summer months..  It is a favorite haunt for migrating snowbirders.

I suppose that if the topic is ice cream, there may be no definitive "best" brand because we all grow up differently and all have different gold standards on which brand tastes the best. The same for chocolate. The same for ice cream AND chocolate. But if you scratch a Michigander even just a little, they will almost always have an opinion on Mackinac Island fudge, sometimes even down to the shop which made it.

You want Michigan? Mackinac Island fudge. You definitely will gain weight. It's an addiction.

Yep, nothing will ever beat home made. If a company were to make it the way my parents did, it would have to sell for ten bucks a quart.

How much nostalgia you wanna get here? I've only done it once with a hand-cranked 1940s-era ice cream maker, and that was entirely enough, thanks. Pay for the convenience. Get it in cartons or tubs or squeezed from some machine....but do get it. It's ice cream. It's worth it.
