I keep looking at the Kindle and now with the new one they almost have me. Anyone have one? Should I wait for the color version? Should I wait for Solar to buy it for me? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Well Solar just don't stand there. Get her a colored version. Your body can only take one tree falling on you in a life time.

I think she meant the screen, not the case. ;)
They don't make a color version yet, so I'm safe for a few years. ;D
I love my Kindle, I've got the DX and it's got me reading again. The "MaxiPad" is a fun toy that does a little bit of everything 1/2 assed. What I like about the Kindle is it's an excellent reader, actually IMO (and many others) it's the best eReader there is. You can easily read it outside in the sunlight, no eyestrain. I carry mine around with me most of the time and find myself reading in Cafe's, riding the bus, etc. etc. Will it replace books, nope but it has replaced magazines and paperbacks.
I love it!

I can only imagine it would have a loss in quality, unless you can switch back and forth color/black and white.

Good info. I love to read....books, magazines etc. But don't always have time to go to a book store. This could definitely make it easier for me - especially if we get snowed in again this year. You don't think I should wait for the version that will have color? I was thinking with magazines I may want that.
But then again I don't want to give Solar too much leeway... ::) ::) ::)

Nope and I really don't care for Color, it's a reader. How many paperbacks have "color" other than their covers?

I've got the Kindle DX 2nd Generation. I had the first Kindle DX and loved it so much my Father kept eyeballing it. So when he went into the hospital for a double bypass I gave him mine and got the 2nd Generation, I love it even more. Transferring the account over to him was a piece of cake, basically just unregistered and registered it on his account I created for him. Then my new one came already set up.
Amazon's library is the largest of both free and pay books. I also can download the free books from the Gutenberg Project easily. There is no cost with connecting to the 3G network, it works internationally. Hell I was up in the high Andes this year and bought a book and it was delivered right to my Kindle, as long as you've got a cell connection you're pretty much set.
Anyway my eyes are going bad, you know the age thing. Well I can read my books without glasses, the battery lasts for weeks without having to charge it up. There is no eye strain thanks to the way eInk is designed, it really is wonderful.
Bottom line is that it easily replaces paperbacks and magazines, major plus about subscribing to magazines is there is no advertisements, none, zilch! I get Readers Digest and it only costs around a $1.50 a month, love it. You've got to be careful about Newspapers though, they seriously gouge you. I did a trial run of the Seattle Times, 1/4 of the content/articles as the paper and they wanted $10 a month, no thank you. It's a rag but I wanted the local news and they fail miserably. Oh that's another think I love about the Kindle, subscriptions to periodicals you get a 14 day trial run, if you don't like it cancel and you're not charged.

A lot of really good information. I was wondering about how large the print went..I am old..so it is good to hear it can go large.
I bet I could even get my crossword puzzle books.... So many great ideas. It could keep me entertained for hours. ST :) :) :)
Oh about
THIS large 8)
The size that Solar would need ;D ;D ;D
Also has auto screen where you can flip it around into different positions on the fly while you're reading. I tend to turn that off myself though.
What's cool on the DX (not sure about the regular Kindle though) is you can also drag your mp3 files over and plug in head phones so you can listen to music while you read. It's still in "Experimental" mode now but they are actively developing it.
You can plug it in and it doesn't matter what OS you're on, I use Linux and when I plug in my Kindle it just reads as a drive. So I can just drag and drop my files over to it.
It also reads PDF and there's also a feature where you just email a file like a MS Word Doc to your account, for about a buck or two they'll "Kindlize" it and it's delivered to your Kindle. But mostly if you've got PDF files or Free eBooks you can just drag and drop to your Kindle with your computer.

I hope you can get it to connect. Once you do, you'll love being able to get another book when you finish the one you're reading. I don't have a Kindle, but I read ebooks on my Palm Pre. I have both the pReader app and the Kobo app, and it's wonderful being able to get a book from Kobo where ever I happen to be. I have to download books I buy from Fictionwise, or Baen books to my computer and then drag them to my Pre, but the books I get from Kobo download directly to my phone. I love my Pre. ^-^

My oldest gave me a $50 Kindle credit. I have already located 3 books to down load. I can now finish the Babylon Rising Series by Tim LaHaye. I am really excited. Especially with winter coming on. My reading time will go up.... :) :)
