Title: I just got a speeding ticket. The fine is a touch over $100,000.

Not really. I'm not in Finland!

But Reima Kuisla, a Finnish businessman, is in Finland, and he recently was busted for running 65 mph in a 50 mph zone. His fine was 54,000 Euros, roughly $103,000. This is a result of the way Finnish courts calculate fines (http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2015/03/finland-home-of-the-103000-speeding-ticket/387484/).

QuoteFinland's system for calculating fines is relatively simple: It starts with an estimate of the amount of spending money a Finn has for one day, and then divides that by two—the resulting number is considered a reasonable amount of spending money to deprive the offender of. Then, based on the severity of the crime, the system has rules for how many days the offender must go without that money. Going about 15 mph over the speed limit gets you a multiplier of 12 days, and going 25 mph over carries a 22-day multiplier.

Most reckless drivers pay between €30 and €50 per day, for a total of about €400 or €500. Finland's maximum multiplier is 120 days, but there's no ceiling on the fines themselves—the fine is taken as a constant proportion of income whether you make €80,000 a year or €800,000.

What say you? Good idea? Bad idea? Fair? Not fair?

Hmm... It pays to take a taxi.   They could pay off the national debt in no time at all.

This appears to be a system Obama would love. Truly redistribution of wealth to the state.

Take a taxi?! Shit, for that kind of money, the dude could have BOUGHT a fully-equipped cab AND paid a driver to take him wherever he wanted to go for a year.

This sort of thing is going to be news. Right now, the US Dept. of Justice (I use that last word lightly...) is coming down on the Ferguson, MO police department because of its... shall we say, acquisitive approach to ticketing and fining motorists. Yes, Holder is on a mission here, and Ferguson is not particularly more guilty than thousands of other locations of soaking its citizens for fines to fill the city's coffers.

But that's my point. It's going on EVERYWHERE.

Well right now I am about $300.000.00 ahead of the game.

The math is wrong in the article, or is dated. The current rate of exchange is 1 EUR 1.04965 USD
