Title: And a-roundabout he goes....
Post by: quiller on November 11, 2015, 07:05:03 PM
If you've ever had to put up with that insidious piece of highway engineering known as a roundabout, then imagine the stamina it took a 64-year-old driver, when he set a world's record...for not leaving one.

I wish someone had a hot poker up there *** for making them so small.   I have set for over 10min. to go through some as some old fool will not go until it is completely empty.  I go out of my way to not have to go through them.

I can't believe they still use these excuses of design for what is otherwise a failure on the part of planners.
The VA just installed one at Mather when exiting the parking garage. Keep in mind, it wasn't there last time I visited, so upon exiting, I followed the car in front of me, who had just followed the car in front of them, and yes, we all drove over the sign in the center isle that most likely said "Roundabout" but it was so damned mangled, it barely resembled it's original intent.

Like Walks pointed out, this round about is about the size of a big bird bath without water or pedestal, about 25' across, a maneuver my truck can't perform due to turning radius.
And yes, these are govt engineers working with our vaunted VA health system.

Reminds me of LAX airport.

Can't tell you how many times I've circled that thing.

I love watching a forty footer go through them.
Title: Modern Roundabouts
Post by: ScottRAB on November 13, 2015, 12:13:02 PM
Modern roundabouts are the safest form of intersection in the world (much more so than comparable signals).  Visit http://tinyurl.com/iihsRAB for modern roundabout FAQs and safety facts.  Modern roundabouts, and the pedestrian refuge islands approaching them, are two of nine proven safety measures identified by the FHWA, http://tinyurl.com/7qvsaem
The FHWA has a video about modern roundabouts on Youtube, or check out the IIHS video (iihs dot org).

BTW, your challenge questions are for old people;-)

They are sort of tricky.  They may be safer in terms of death, like you can't really get T-boned, but I imagine they are more prone to accidents and fender benders in general.  I could be wrong, of course.

I have yet to run across a person that I know that likes them.   I see people having to stop all the time as there so damn small.  Now if your going through them between 9P.M. or 5A.M. there great.

Remember old people in roundabouts effect everyone now and then, like it or not.

The worst thing is some states have people entering the roundabout yield, while others have people in it yield.

I like 'em.  I hate stopping.  I just cruise through the yield-section and keep goin'.

Our are so small I am lucky to get my Dodge Ram 2500 through them with out going over the inside curb of the roundabout.  Most of our are only one lane very small roundabout.

Highway and street-codes must be different there.  Here, the right turns are 45-degree angles.

They have taken out 4 way stops and have dropped in roundabouts in the same area.  There like driving around in a donut hole.

Ah! The simple things amuse me. In England, roundabouts of all sizes seem to be everywhere. In some places, they even take the place of speed bumps. For maximum hilarity, turn on your GPS and listen to it freak out trying to tell you which way to go.

  I neither own nor want a GPS. The one my wife has makes more mistakes than it's worth.

The one I have now will get me there about 90% of the time.  The other 10% within a block or two if I don't take the wrong ramp.
