Title: 67 guests
Post by: elmerfudd on September 05, 2011, 06:36:53 PM
67 guests just now.  It would be interesting to know how many are repeats, and what their reasons for visiting are.  Could the admins start a temporary thread to which anybody could post, even anonymously, for determining that? Guests could post without registering for a limited time, say, and would be asked to state if they frequently visit and give their reasons for just visiting and not registering so they can post.  In fact, let 'em post for that limited time anywhere they like.  Again, anonymously.  Say for a month.  At the end of the month, back to business as usual.  Might get a few more active members.  Kind of like a free weekend with HBO sometimes results in people subscribing.

Could be.  But if we assume there are maybe 1 billion people on the web, maybe100 million of which are in the US of A (I got both figures from my rectal data base), it's not much of a street.  Wouldn't you like to know more about who they are (not names, though) and why they visit and why they don't join?  And if they were allowed to post without joining, that might prompt them to join.  Just let it happen for a month and see what happens?

Down to 55 now.  Maybe they're all one timers?

Figuring that out is indeed on the TODO list.  I think we have determined most of them are are one timers, with a  few views on their visit...

Hmmm...If they care they would log in.

So you can tell if there are repeats.  If there aren't many repeats, allowing them to post even for a while won't really make any difference.

It does, because you can even track their demographics of who they are, what they view, etc.  The more guest traffic, the more you can drive up your ad rates.

A pretty good number of them are students doing research,, some even steal our work and turn it in as their own, word spreads fast amongst students when they find a credible site to mine.

Others are stealing ideas for threads they can post on their own forums, and some are search engines.
About 10 to 20% are search engines, and computer queries.

But the overall majority are real people from around the World.

Not that you don't know more about your business than I do, so please don't be offended, but if you let people post without joining for, say, a month, mightn't it increase the active membership?  And mighn't that let you run your ad rates up, too?

I'll be honest, though.  I have been on three boards, currently two, and I don't pay any attention to the ads.  If I had not been told there WERE ads, I would not have known there were.

Not at all... this is a new area for me, so I don't pretend to be an expert.  I am learning as we go along.

That is true, but to my way of thinking, you lose some control over the quality of poster.  We want more conservatives, and not just posts.  The more conservative content we have, the more viewers, from all walks of life, we will attract.

Same here.  I never click on the ads...

Well, I am not suggesting you let them post forever.  YOu can always ban them even if you don't know who they are, can't you?  But do you really just ant more conservatives?  If everybody basically agrees, all you have is a coffee club without the coffee.

Simple answer , no.
It carries severe ramifications, from plagiarism, to child porn being posted anonymously, to getting bombarded with spam.

We require email addresses as recourse in the event we get sued for any violations, not to mention shut down.
So basically we can't take the risk.

Makes sense.  See, I knew y'all knew more about it than I did, but now I know more than I did before, too.

I thought about it as well, just letting lurkers post for a day, then our filter failed and we got inundated with bots posting all kinds of spam, it was a headache, Taxed and I were deleting nearly 100 trolls per day, until he put a bot stopper question up before they can login/register.

And now I know even more, including knowing there is more to this kind of stuff than I thought.  But I am definitely not a puter guy.  I guess I am like Donald Rumsfeld in that I didn't know what I didn't know, but now that I know what I don't know, I am better off.
