It is good to have a pantry or larder of some sort just for everyday use, and also some extras if you are trapped by flood, road closures, tornado damage or any outside happening that might keep you from get supplies fromoutside sources. A rotation system can keep expiration dates from coming too close.

In Caches, where it might be more difficult to rotate goods, what might you be able to store as edibles that could last years instead of months? They also would have to be kept through temperature extremes.

We are buying one of those self feeding racks that hold an assortment of can goods.
You feed the fresh stuff in last, so as you pull a can out, another takes its place.

You're right about temperature extremes, my neighbor had a potluck and made some chili with tomato sauce that had turned, made everyone sick.
He said it was only a year old, but he had recently moved up here and wasn't aware of the temperature extremes.
Most likely the cans froze and the seal lost its integrity.

We don't use these, we have our own rotation system, but many other people we know do, and they love them.

How funny, we just placed our first order and it will be here tomorrow.
This is probably the best preserved and tasting food I've ever come across.
The milk tastes better than what I get at Costco or Sams club and the fruit is as good a fresh.

Good stuff! I wonder if somebody makes dummy cans that can be used as mini caches that can be hidden in a rack like one of these. A survival kit hidden in a can of pickled hog jowls, bullets in a spinach can, flash bang device in a jar of Kimshi.

Yes they do and this site has probably the best price for a canning machine Ive found.
I looked some time back for one, but found they are just a bit pricey, so I thought I'd watch for one on craigs list instead.

Just ignore the gloom and doom stupidity of the Earth clock.

Found one just a bit cheaper without all the hype.

We have access to a canning machine nearby.  It's awesome.  We purchase our own bulk food, buy the #10 cans, lids and air packets.  We've seriously considered buying our own, but why spend the money when you can use one for free

As far as canning a survival kit and other items, I never thought of that - looks like I have some "canning" to do very soon.

I wouldn't mind having one, but I can't justify the price, not with a seal a meal on hand.

This "Canning" has inspired me- a "rusty" or dented can in a shed is not going to attract much attention from looters, and if you are trapped in an out building, or forced to a secondary position, a can of "possibles" could come in handy. If having to cross country, you can hide (no pun intended) documents, medical suplies, valuables, etc. in a can marked beets - if someone rifles through your pack, chances are they will go untouched.

With the kind of can opener that unseals a can, rather than cuts it open, you can turn many products into hiding places.
Like a WD-40 can can hold money, or a coffee can opened at the bottom can hold a spare gun.
Just lightly glue the bottom back on the can, and you have an excellent hiding place, quickly opens without a can opener. I bought one manual and one electric, I love these types, its cleaner and easier to get stuff out of the can.
Also you can open the other end and easily smash the can to save space.

very cool!
I got mine at Raley's for under ten bucks, the electric opener was under thirty at Bed bath and beyond, they also have a manual version.
