This was a group exercise given at a recent team building meeting. I will give the answers in a couple of days. Let's see who gets the closest.
Lost on the Moon Exercise
Instructions:
Your spaceship has just crash-landed on the lighted surface of the moon. You were scheduled to rendezvous with a mother ship 200 miles away, also on the lighted side of the moon, but the rough landing has ruined your ship and destroyed all the equipment on board, except for the 14 items listed below.
Your crew's survival depends on reaching the mother ship, so you must choose the most critical items available for the 200-mile trip. Your task is to rank the 14 items according to their importance in allowing your crew to survive the 200-mile journey to the mother ship. In the column titled "Your Rank," place the number 1 by the most important item, the number 2 by the second most important item, and so on through the number 14, the least important.
You have TEN minutes to complete this worksheet.
Item:
Box of matches
Food concentrate
Fifty feet of nylon rope
Parachute silk
Solar-powered portable heating unit
Two .45 caliber pistols
One case of dehydrated milk
Two 100-pound tanks of oxygen
Map of the moon's constellations
Self-inflating life raft
Magnetic compass
Five gallons of water
Signal flares
Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter
Good luck!

Two 100-pound tanks of oxygen
We need oxygen I am on the moon.
Five gallons of water
We need water also for drinking and the food concentrate.
Food concentrate
We need food.
One case of dehydrated milk
We need something to make the food concentrate taste good
so we can eat it. LOL
Fifty feet of nylon rope
For climbing or lowering myself and also for making camping shelter cove
from the sun if needed.
Parachute silk
for making camping shelter cove from the sun if needed.
Map of the moon's constellations
Now that we have the basic thing for staying alive we need to
know where we are going. LOL
Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter
Would be nice to know if we am getting close to where I am going.
Signal flares
If someone on the FM system were to talk back to me
we could signal them where I am at.
Solar-powered portable heating unit
Hmmm. we am on the light side of the moon.
Magnetic compass
If it was dark out all the time we would need one.
Box of matches
Would help me see the compass if we was on the dark side of the moon.
Two .45 caliber pistols
Who am going to shoot, dead people don't help.
Self-inflating life raft
Hmm. No water on the moon. But then this could be at the top
of the list for putting all the supply in to stay alive. You could pull them along and not have to pack them
Now IF I was a lib I would have to change my way of thinking. LOL
And here is what NASA said.....
1. Two 100-pound tanks of oxygen-Most pressing survival need. Weight is not a factor since gravity is one-sixth of the Earth's - - each tank weighs only about 17 pounds on the moon
2. Five gallons of water-Needed for replacement of tremendous liquid loss on the light side
3. Map of the moon's constellations-Primary means of navigation – star patterns appear essentially identical on the moon as on Earth
4. Food concentrate-Efficient means of supplying energy requirements
5. Solar-powered FM receiver-transmitter-For communication with the mother ship. Requires line-of-sight transmission and can only be used over short ranges)
6. Fifty feet of nylon rope-Useful in scaling cliffs and tying injured together
7. Parachute silk-Protection from sun's rays
8. Self-inflating life raft-CO2 bottle in military raft may be used for propulsion
9. Signal flares-Use as distress signal when the mother ship is sighted
10. Two .45 caliber pistols-Possible means of self-propulsion
11. One case of dehydrated milk-Bulkier duplication of food concentrate
12. Solar-powered portable heating unit-Not needed unless on dark side of the moon. Over 300 degrees on the light side.
13. Magnetic compass-The magnetic field on the moon is not polarized, so it's worthless for navigation
14. Box of matches-Virtually worthless – there's no oxygen on the moon to sustain combustion

I am happy to know I do not have to depend on NASA.
All in all an interesting concept for a thread, though I have to take exception with Co2 as a propellant, granted it would hurdle your ass at an extremely accelerated rate, assuming one will simply land on their feet and come to a complete stop, is leap of faith, or rather fantasy.
Risking shredding ones protective suit from tumbling on the surface of a rocky moon, seems like a bigger gamble than simply walking.
I could be wrong, they could be a last ditch effort and merely an attempt to give hope as a lost option, because you'll never make the hundred mile trek anyway.
