Have you ever experienced MRE ...? What did YOU rename it (standard fare while sitting around a campfire, trying to figure out what it REALLY TASTES LIKE...) So, there's Chicken-ala-king, and all the rest smothered in something gooey to mask it's true identity.
I was lucky, during the Nam era our rations were actual canned food and tasted great, (K rations, I think) not all, but most and all was edible.
I did have MRE's in the Forest service, kept them on my rig for emergencies and luckily only had to be subjected twice.
Funny story, one of the other officers was hungry, didn't have a way to heat it, so he decided to eat the hamburger patty dry along with the other contents.
Yeah, I warned him about expansion, but he was an idiot rock head macho kind of fool, that claimed he was tough and could eat a truck.
About ten minutes went by and he was doubled over in cramps on the floor. Yes, we laughed at the dumb ass.
Then the FMO showed up and said just drink some water, he looked at us, winked and handed him a canteen.
Yes, it only made it worse because the meat quickly expanded from the water. I guess it wasn't the first time he'd seen someone eat one dry.
Sine I have no experience eating MRE's, I didn't vote. I doubt they are as bad as C-Rations or K-Rations. I have had both and they are not very tasty. Especially the Ham and MFers(lima beans). Absolutely horrible.
MREs! In Basic and AIT I kept expecting one to be labeled "Waste, Toxic (with beans)"
In the guard we were issued MREs for midday meal during annual training. (Being HHC+, the ocifers liked their hot meals, so the rest of us benefited with hots for breakfast and dinner) The only MRE I ate while in the Guard was due to a direct order from my section sergeant under the excuse he didn't want anyone falling out from dehydration.
All others I simply stashed in my duffel, then sold them to hunters that fall.
My brother brought a bunch back a few years ago. I really liked the stuff! It was dense and didn't taste bad at all.

I understand they've improved over the years, as well as made by different contractors.
Early stuff was merely subsistence food, but the latest stuff is supposed to be not half bad.
If it's anything like the freeze dried food I buy today, then it's pretty damn good.
