Title: Beginner Survival Tips For The City Folk
Post by: Solar on December 07, 2010, 07:09:48 AM
I edited down the list, but the author has a few books out that may be a must for some people.

1.      Guns!

2.      Water –
3.      Heat –

4.      Food –
5.      Medical supplies –

6.      Power and Lights –

7.      Communications – Make sure you have a cell phone, CB Radio,
8.      Transportation –  A larger vehicle with extra storage space and four-wheel drive is best.

9.      Entertainment – This may sound silly to you, but have you ever been trapped inside a house with four screaming kids with nothing to do? You'll need books and board games for your own sanity. If you have the generator and lots of fuel, make the whole adventure an apocalyptic movie marathon! I'm talking about good family movies like Tremors, Zombieland, and Red Dawn, you know, the basics.

10.  God – No home should be without God, especially in a time of emergency. I know that God isn't considered a "thing", but he is the ruler of all "things", so I'm using Him to round out my list of 10 things every home should have for short-term survival.

1. Learn how to "read" the wind, water, clouds etc. Dangerous weather such as sudden storms, tornado, snow etc. Living in the city will dull your senses.

2. Take a hiking trip and look around in the forest at all the things that can be used in as emergency food sources, look for oak trees and acorns, take some home and learn how to cook them, an important source of nutrition.

3. Gas mask...I know it sounds stupid, but everyone should have a gas mask for family memebers. do you know how many toxic chemicals are routinely transported thru urban areas? What happens when a tanker truck overturns on the freeway or a train goes off the track near the center of town and you have a big green cloud floating around?

Do you know your hazmat signs on said vehicles?

Good point Billy, when it comes down to the pressing moment, it is definitely not the time to start learning.
People that don't hit the wilderness on a regular basis may want to pick up a book on survival, as to what is eatable, and how to cure it for consumption.

Like acorns, you can take the bark form the Tan oak tree and boil them together, the tannic acid cures the acorn, taking it's bitterness away.
The bark is also used for tanning hides.

Gas mask is an excellent tip as well, if there are fires from looters, you may need it to get out of the house.

You just let me run the forum, if I want to attract new members, that's my prerogative.

Actually, Tom Brown has written a survival guide for city people.  I have read it,years ago,,, very informative... I will find his link, he runs a school out in the Pine Barrens. Boy to go there for a lesson or two would be good. My brother went to I think 10 of his sessions,,,he comes home n shows me what he learned.... From reading his books,,,I have learned one heck of alot.....

Hey, whatever it takes to get more people in here, Solar.  The CPF is a great place, and more people need to know that it exists!

        1.) Awareness
        2.) Knowledge
        3.) Experience
        4.) Common Sense
        5.) Field Expediency
        6.) Practice
7.) Faith ( in self, if not as well in a supreme being)
        8.) Will

It does not matter what or how much equipment you have, you need the intangibles as well. There are others, but these come to mind. If you have a family, many of the survival skills can be played as a game. Then they become easy, and not as threatening as having to learn them on the go.

Wow...you are absolutely correct.  You can have all the "stuff" you need but it you don't have the mindset or skills it will not be as effective.   8)

I agree, and I think rehearsal is probably the most important, if you have everything you need, but forgot how to use it.....

ST and I already live the lifestyle, I have been for more than 20 years, I just drug ST into it a couple of years ago and she actually adapted quite well.
It's amazing how easy it is when you do without the frivolities of life, simply getting back to the basics.

It's not like we do without, it's just that living off the grid makes you appreciate the little things.

I just asked ST what she misses the most and she said it was the ability to just run to the store.
Which for me, is a good thing, you tend to stock up on supplies better.

The best advice I could give city folks on survival is to get out of dodge as fast as you can :P

Everything I've read about crisis, says to be the first out, because the welcome mat will only be up for more than a day in the outlying areas.
Living where I do, I can attest to this, we won't let very many camp out in the area.
They WILL be told to move on at gun point.

"Will" is too far down the list. Without will, most of the rest don't matter.

True, Will is far down the list, but on the other hand, it is incomplete and not in any real order of priority.

Yep. Will needs to be a "brother" to many of the other items on the list. Without Big Brother Will, many of the others can't survive.

Most city people will not leave. They will stay and loot. I think when thats done,,,they will go nuts. I have learned that city people are conditioned to  think it's someone elses job to make surte they have creature comforts. Not all of them are cityits but have mercy alot of them are.

The city leeches will strip the cities clean, pillage and rape and kill, and the "survivors" will fan out into the countryside.  That's the point when the rest of us must be locked and loaded.  That is when the PREPARED will be separated from the unprepared.

Country folks stick together.  It's a different way of life out in the country.  City dwellers usually aren't held in very high esteem to begin with, especially ones that break the law and are perceived as threats.

I just hope if it ever happens, it happens in the Winter, that way, the city scum will be forced further West, towards Pelosi's district.
St and I will stay safe buried in the snow, where no citified scum would venture. :))
