is 3 months worth of food and water enough?  How much and what do you have stocked up? How do I save water?  What about the utilities,,,, how are you going to stay up and running,,,,
Ya think the ones that have been laughing at my antics are starting to get alittle frisky now? lmao
Anyone else getting this kind of thing happening to them?

I'd say 3 months is a perfect first goal.

Of course, that's a starting place, water in my opinion is the most important of all, you simply can't live without it.
Food of course is a close second, raw foods as in flour etc is a must, considering it's cheap and easily stored, next is canning and dehydrated foods, again, cheap and take up little room.
Canning is also an excellent source of water, since you don't need to use your drinking supply since most canned goods come with their own.
Third on the list are the daily essentials starting with medications, the rest can be made from things found around the house, except for TP, which is disposable, no one wants to reuse a rag and it takes water to clean them.

I get people asking me where to start, and I always tell them water and don't count on frozen food, the power may not be available in a crunch.
I tell them every time they go to a store like Sams club to buy an extra bag of jerky and nuts, eventually you can have quite a nice supply to get you through a few tough weeks, but to always save it for last, after you've exhausted all other supplies.

Good questions Elfie, and 3 months is a perfect starting place to shoot for.

Yes they are for first timers... I find it interesting that they are asking now, rather seriously I might add, after all this time of laughing at me telling me I am nuts..  Me, I stock this place usually 6 to 9 months,,, why? because I hate schleppin heavy stuff in the winter... this year I have gone for more...but yes I do start with water,,, protiens and the list you have said to when talking to a person who is no longer either laughing, shaking their heads or coming out with other colorful; expressions to tell me how nuts I am for doing it in the beginning...
I've been a stocker for  a way way long time.....

My whole justification for stocking is to hedge against inflation, mostly everything will cost possibly a third more.
And since milk is one of my staples, we have been stocking a 2 year supply of freeze dried milk, tastes great and you don't have to run to the store every week.
Of course there is always the potential for natural disaster like when we had fires last year, the stores couldn't stock enough generators, and people were panicking.

I always ask people that laugh at me for stocking, if they buy insurance, it's the same exact thing, it's insurance against tough times, which is inevitable, unlike a car accident or your house burning down.

I hear you there.   Ugh prices are crazy and going to get crazier. I've just always have stocked. Its pretty much the way of it.  Canning this year was not at all becuase of the heat,,cooked my gardens,,,but thats ok,,,I'll know the difference with the store bought stuff then mine.... but I always look for the longest use by time,,, and use that first...
