Title: Ghost?
Post by: kroz on May 13, 2015, 09:46:01 AM
Do any of you geeks know much about the Ghost software and server?

A fellow told me that it is the best system for blocking cookies and other tracking devices.

True?

Dunno..... I'm not a geek.   He just said "Ghost" with apps even for your phone.....

He thought it was terrific.  I have never heard of it...... but that isn't to be surprising.

The only Ghost system I know of is Norton's, where it makes a complete back up of your system, so if attacked, you literally pick up from when it crashed.
Doesn't stop anything, just replaces it.

Oh geeezz quiller.  That is exactly what happened to me.  A flash-mob took control of my computer!!!

Eventually the entire computer had to be swept clean like a new computer.  A new system was installed.  It is foreign to me and I struggle to do basic tasks now.   aaarrrggghhhh !!!

I hate learning NEW techy stuff!   :scared:

But, but, but --- being forced to use software which doesn't even come with a User Manual is GOOD for you!

Per the "Ghost" reference: it probably does refer to the Norton Ghost imaging system which copies a clean install of your hard drive, which greatly speeds up recovery after a hard drive crash or other seemingly-insurmountable problem.

Here's a place to start researching this last-ditch back-up.... The free systems may come with adware or other add-ons, so do read their Terms of Service closely.

The first time I rebuilt from scratch and took about 7 hours. The second time, four. That was BEFORE I took a look at imaging.

Time and hassle to rebuild from scratch can be sliced to a fraction.

Now, I never claimed to know a damned thing about geek stuff, except for the occasional foray to places like http://www.majorgeeks.com/ which offer up literally thousands of software programs both terrific and many arcane. It's well-organized by topic and offers the newest versions for Mozilla and literally thousands of other programs (I said repetitively).

It's worth a close look just in case you have a recurring problem and something at MajorGeeks sounds close to a solution.

It's got a geek Rosetta stone for translating stuff Taxed doesn't think we should know.

Oh. About imaging. Start here.

I am not really trying to recover anything.  I have everything on my thumb drive.  I am just trying to understand my new operating system.  I cannot attach any of my photos to my correspondence anymore among other things.

All things have changed.  Nothing works the way it used to work....... yada, yada......

Of course, they say it is BETTER than the old.  I say.... not if I can't use it!

Okay, this sounds like an email problem. It's possible you accidentally blacklisted your image host (if you have one), or if not, you did something to the email preferences. Try the help section for your email provider.
