Title: What Makes a Good Forum
Post by: Solar on January 06, 2014, 03:37:46 PM
I ask only because as I roam the web, I see some successful forums, but I always see more negatives than positives.

I'd like to hear some suggestions, not that we'd implement them, but it would help to hear what you all consider singularly as good features, policy, even color choice... etc.

Would be nice if we could Highlight areas in yellow in a persons  posts that we are talking about.  Or even our own posts.  Don't know if this system can do that.

One thing I see missing here is Media. More and more on the web video content is important. Sometimes it's not what someone said but how they say it. Could be since I've only been back a short time I just haven't figured out how to post it here but it seems to me it would be a major improvement to be able to link a you tube video!

No it is like using a wide yellow highlighter.  As redbeard said yellow is a very hard text to read.   If you highlight it the black stands out in the yellow highlight.

You should be able to just posts a youtube address and it should show up most of the time.  Just quote my posts and you will see all I did was posts the address.

I like it. As things stand, we can bold and change color and size and so on, but the yellow highlighting is slick.

Question: Is there any way we can change the default font size for quoted text? You guys may have noticed that I've been manually bumping some of my quote texts up to 10-pt. recently. For my tired old eyes, that tiny text in the gray quote box is 'squint city.'

LOL at my age I keep my monitor set at 170.  That way I can see most everything with out adjusting the size most of the time.  But I have four way scroll so it doesn't matter 99% of the time.

I suppose I could blow up the entire screen, but I was just wondering about the default size of quoted text, which is the only thing I have a hard time reading. For instance, by default a quote of the previous post looks like this:

If I go about 195 things walk off my viewing area on both sides.  Even at 170 I have to adjust for some photos or 1/2 of it is off to the right and I can not see it all.

If 100 is normal then 200 is double that in size.  I can adjust out to 400 but that would give me a headache over time it is so big.

So you and Boo think policy wise we're doing it Right.
How do you think an increase of say, 1000 members posting at a time might affect the forum?

I think the way it is now, makes for a nice flow, but what if we were to increase that number 5 fold?

Having 1000 members posting at the same time would be a disaster. At this time we have a very good cross section of folks from around the country and occasional new regulars are refreshing. I appreciate how quickly trolls and imposters are identified. This quick action sends a message and discourages the loons.

In general, I agree. I was surprised (actually a bit annoyed) at how long cp was permitted to trash the place. Arguing with someone like SciFiFan is at least an exercise in debate and involves some research. Having cp around was like having some poor little BACKWARD child running through THE schoolyard, screaming at the TOP OF HIS LUNGS, with a huge ------>"KICK ME HARD"<------ sign taped to his back, searching -- IN VAIN!!! -- for the short bus, and ???DROPPING??? little piles of shit along the way.

Well I will do my part tonight and cherry pick a few people from my E-Mail list to send your link to. If everyone on line was to do that and we just got a 10% response you could increase your active poster dramatically! I think I know a few that may check it out!!

Excellent idea, Taxed is going to generate a news letter and send it out to every member that ever joined. (thousands)
That's why I asked about what people thought about a huge influx of posters in a short period of time.

Thing is, we are going to get extremely busy as the mid terms approach, so all members need to be prepared for a whooole lot of new faces.
