The Democratic-controlled House on Friday approved a bill to decriminalize and tax marijuana at the federal level, reversing what supporters called a failed policy of criminalization of pot use and taking steps to address racial disparities in enforcement of federal drug laws.

Opponents, mostly Republicans, called the bill a hollow political gesture and mocked Democrats for bringing it up at a time when thousands of Americans are dying from the coronavirus pandemic.

The final vote was 228-164, with most Democrats joined by 5 Republicans and an independent to pass the legislation. Most Republicans and six Democrats opposed the bill.

I didn't know this was in the works. I'm not in disagreement with the bill, but I'd have to dig a little into it to see what it entails. Unless the Senate flips, though, this is DOA.

So...you're not against decriminalization just against the Federal government taxing...

What's the proposed tax rate?

Edit: nevermind, I see it's 5%.

I'm also pleasantly surprised by Matt Gaetz. He was a co-sponsor

1. If this were to become a law you wouldn't have less liberty.

2. what's SOMA?

So once again putting words in our mouth.   F the state tax and the government tax.  Marijuana is a drug and should only be by Rx ( prescriptions) for medical problems by a doctor.

What part of "decriminalization" do you not get? Why does the govt get a cut if someone wants to grow a plant and share it?
I warned about this over a decade ago, that the only reason weed would become legal, is if govt got a cut.

If you're serious, you should be demanding that decriminalization comes with no strings, period! Otherwise, it will become a marketable industry, unlike backyard gardens.
Should there be laws governing it? You bet, but it shouldn't come with a bribe attached.

I'm not against that.

And that can still be the case even if this law passes. Each State treats it differently.

I've heard for many years the advocates of outright legalization argue that the politicians should do it for the income alone. For them, the tax is worth it.

Then the Fed law should take them to court and jail some asses.

I've never heard that argument, and its been an issue with Libertarians for decades. They are the ones who've been backing decriminalization since day one.
Anytime govt gets involved with ANYTHING, they fuck it up! Simply decimalize it and call it a day. If everyone can grow it with impunity, there goes the profit factor, guaranteed!

I don't think that decriminalizing it stops you from growing it in your own backyard.

But there were always going to be some companies in the market offering the product w/o you having to grow it yourself.

Those companies were always going to have to pay a tax. Even if it were just State taxes.

SOMA has nothing to do with taxes.....
