Q PATRIOT!!!

Talk about an overrated position on the world stage. I was once a catholic and oh well that's all there is to say!

I still am but if they make a "politically correct" pick for the next one...I'll be joining you as an ex-one.  'Nuff said...

I wonder if he decision was based on decades of believing one way, only to discover politics is at it's core.
Like the imaginary "Mr Smith goes to Washington" syndrome, one wants to make change, only to discover others do not share in your beliefs.
Now he's just to old to fight any longer.

I agree, but to the followers of the Faith, he is the last word of God.
And the Church has quite a following and is deeply entwined politically, many on the left as well.

Peter Kodwo Appiah was in favor of the socialist scam Tobin Tax, it would seem this cardinal is on the far left.

I'll never believe his reason for retiring was as he supposedly stated, that age and fraility was the reason for his retirement.  Too much has confronted the church in areas that don't go along with their faith.

It's all politics in the end.

"Because his nearly eight years on the Throne of the Fisherman never really produced the results he hoped for. He did not unite the conservative and progressive wings of the Catholic Church. He did not re-establish its place in Europe, the work of a previous Pope Benedict and the reason he took that name. Nor did he expand its foothold in Asia, cement its dominance in Latin America, or make serious inroads in Africa. And he did not bring to fruition the ecumenical understanding with other major faiths that he hoped would bloom during his reign."

The left is excellent in infiltrating organizations and government departments/directorates. Their political ideology is their religion, whereas we seperate ideology and religion. I don't go to Church to talk about economics, but they do. I.e East Germany Catholic Church claimed communism is the only form of government in compliance with christianity.

Don't be surprised if this is the next Pope.

I am not Catholic, so I don't have a dog in this fight. However, I can see a real philosophical struggle within the church if a "leftist" Pope is elected. The worldwide tax mentioned in the article is truly controversial.

Time for a Pope under 70...
