Fifty-five percent of voters want to see the high-speed rail bond issue that was approved in 2008 back on the ballot, and 59 percent say they would now vote against it, according to the USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times survey (lat.ms/N9tTcm) published Saturday.

A majority of voters have turned against the ambitious undertaking just as Gov. Jerry Brown is pushing lawmakers to approve the start of construction in the Central Valley later this year.

Give Obama another four years, and every other state can look forward to the insanity that is California. He considers California the model state for the rest of the country.

I think every state has that problem. We vote it down and they ram it down our throats. My big problem is when a big city like Seattle wants something and they make the whole state pay for it.
If we can get this on the ballot, we'll kill it.
This only serves two places in the state, the Bay area and LA, two liberal hubs, the rest of us would have to drive 100 miles or more just to get on the train.
I'll drive or fly, screw these libs and their toys.

So true. The city here built a commuter train, much like the coaster train on the pacific coast, that goes from 30 miles inland to the coast. It's a total bust. I don't think more than 20 people ride it at any given time. These are the so called progressive ideas that are bankrupting California.

well, they've been spending the money at least. Voters shouldn't rush Feinstein's hubby tho. There's a lot to consult about... like how to spend even more before the project actually gets started.

You better hope not! If CA goes down the tubes, the country goes down the tubes. CA is
the 8th or 9th largest economy in the
WORLD. 1 in 10 Americans lives there. And at least 15% of
the GDP of the 50 states comes from that one state. (PS About 1/2 of the GDP, from 5 states supports
the other 45). Careful who wish will fail.

Ca used to be the 3rd largest economy in the world, right behind France, US being first.

BUT ask the folks from DC to BOSTON if they want aaaaalllllll those cars thrown out on I-95 (not mention all the other streets, hiways, and road) in each of their states and cities?? Amtrak might look like a pretty good bet to them afterall.

Maybe to them, but ONLY to them. The Acela Express line (DC-NYC-Boston) is the one and only Amtrak run that actually takes in more passenger money than it costs to run. Every other line Amtrak line "loses money," that is, requires tax subsidies to operate. As taxpayers, we throw away about $1.5 billion every year to run this weird railroad that I've never ridden, and probably never will.
But that's okay. We're all in it together, right?

Amtrak goes past my place in the A.M. going West. and in the P.M. going East. It can be off time from 3 to 5 hours. LOL I would say it is on time about 1/3 of the time. It is down below me about 3/4 of a mile.

The nearest Amtrak station to me would probably be... Cincinnati? Well over two hours from here by car. I've seen the trains -- they run the line along the Ohio River and I get down there occasionally -- but I've never even stepped onto one, and I don't know why I ever would.
But that's okay, right? I still get to contribute my "fair share" to keep those few smiling folks in the windows happy and traveling. Late, but happy. :tounge:

I lived in CA during the Regan years and it was much different then. As far I'm concerned, it cannot hit bottom soon enough. It has become the laughing stock of the USA and is leading the race to the bottom...which, IMO, cannot happen soon enough so that the rebuilding process can begin.

Exactly, except passenger trains by and large stopped being profitable more than fifty years ago. Even in the heyday of railroads, say 1870-1940, most stations handled freight only. Passenger stations were few and far between. Back in the day, there were four railroad stations within walking or riding (horseback) distance of where I sit right now; only one of them sold passenger tickets.
By 1970, all the small-scale "intercity" lines were long gone, and with gas at roughly 30 cents/gallon, and the Interstate system about 3/4-built, only a fool would ride a train.

I would think buses would make more sense. They run on an existing infrastructure. They are flexible in that they can stop anywhere.

When I was a kid, I rode the city's electric buses to take me to the YMCA in downtown Dayton. Of course, they were limited to going where the overhead electric lines went, and I did a lot of walking on both ends of the ride. Diesel buses are a lot more flexible -- and a LOT more expensive to operate and fuel -- but even they won't take you home, or to your girlfriend's house, unless she happens to live along a major thoroughfare. Yeah, they can "stop anywhere." But they won't go off their routes any more than the railroads would/could.
FWIW, I've experienced the magic of Greyhound first-hand. EWWWW.
I just don't think it's practical to build a bullet-rail parallel to an active earthquake fault-line. An entire companion-agency has to arise to combat the rail-system's fracture-propagation via x-ray, laser, and ultrasound technology. -Because the rail interacts with the 'high-speed' motion of the vehicle, unlike normal train-traffic. It just seems unrealistically risky and expensive as we enter 2014...

And for all practical reasons it won't be built.
The Scum Leftists in this state desperately needed money, they knew they had driven the state to bankruptcy; with the bullet train, they could suck federal dollars into the state and create a numbers illusion of solvency.
When we (the TEA) take power, the state will lose this ridiculous funding, the charade of a Ponzi scheme will be over and who ever is in power, will be held accountable.
I'm hoping this will be one of the reasons many a Dim won't run next year and bail on Ca.
