The general election is officially on.
QuoteNewt Gingrich will suspend his campaign next week, ending his pursuit of the presidency, but almost certainly not his life in the national spotlight.
NBC News learned that Gingrich will suspend his campaign on May 1, and may well endorse Mitt Romney, his nemesis throughout the primary season.
But if one thing seems unassailably true about the end of Newt Gingrich's bid for the presidency, it's that we haven't seen the end of Newt Gingrich.

Well played.
We can only wonder what Newt has planned for the days between now and next Tuesday. There must be something in the works, else he'd bow out now. (LONG overdue, IMO...)

Third Party Movement?
He gave it a run....

Third Party Movement?
How's he going to win as a third party candidate when he couldn't win in the Republican primaries? If he does that, then he's just Ross Perot, Jr., literally running in order to make someone else lose. Perot did that to spite Bush and this would be to spite Romney. Now, as I said, I'm not voting because I think Romney sucks, but if Gingrich actively tried to cause Obama to win, then I'm not sure what type of conservative he is -- oh, wait, he's not one. ZING.
If Gingrich runs as a third party or encourages a third party he must really hate America because everyone knows this will hand the election to obummer.
He must have a debt of some sort at another jewelry store that Soros is going to pay off.

Actually, Perot would have had a good chance if it wasn't for the POS Bush1-supporting security manager he had. That guy was a GOP insider, and once news of the GOP hit machine made the news, it sold the election to Slick Willy.
I don't recall Perot ever having much of a chance. Didn't he only score like single digits in the election?
Has the Goofball Ron Paul dropped out yet? Haven't heard much from the old Kook lately
I don't think he ever formally declares that he's out of any race. He just sort of fades away.

Perot never had a chance. It only seemed that way because the media started treating him favorably once it saw he was drawing votes mainly from Bush. Had he been drawing votes mainly from Clintoon, they would have crucified him.

In '92 he went from 39% to 20% and then pulled out, then tried to re-enter the race.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Perot (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ross_Perot)
In September he qualified for all fifty state ballots. On October 1, he announced his intention to reenter the presidential race. He said that Republican operatives had wanted to reveal compromising photographs of his daughter, which would disrupt her wedding, and he wanted to spare her from embarrassment. Scott Barnes, a private investigator and security consultant who had testified to that effect, later recanted his story. He revealed in 1997 that he had deceived Perot about the existence of the photographs, and that he had created the hoax with others who were not involved with any political campaign. Barnes was a Bush supporter, and believed that if it were revealed that Republicans were involved in dirty tricks, it would harm Bush's candidacy.

Your choices in November are the candidate for the position of Bush5.0 or the kook.
Go Ron Paul!
Ah, Wikipedia strikes again.
Polls taken at the time pretty well prove that Ross Perot's bizarre 1992 campaign gave the U.S. presidency to Bill Clinton. That's twenty-year-old history.
What is "Bush 5.0?"

Bush-Clinton-Bush-obama-whoever wins in November = Bush dynasty 5.0 (OK, if the current denizen of the WH wins, it'll remain Bush 4.0)
Actually, I liked Perot, looney tunes and all. Even 20 years ago, many of us realized that we need a change of direction in DC. If it weren't for that weasel Scott Barnes, Perot would have had a better showing. One thing to his advantage is that Perot financed a lot of his campaigning out of pocket. He wasn't bought off with campaign contributions.

Nineteen percent as I recall.

That old kook has quietly, ( his people have ) been working the local and state conventions picking off delegates to the national convention, while The Kook himself still draws large crowds at the town halls he holds, some even in inclement weather.
With any luck at all, not likely to happen, but still possible for Paul to be on the ballot at the Convention, that great sucking sound will be your arse puckering up against the cushion you happen to be sitting on.

Now he says "probably about Wednesday, May 2." But I think he said he is "suspending" his campaign at one point. When Herman Cain "suspended" his there were a few on this forum who pointed out that was different from "quitting." Even questioned my comprehension in doing so. Oh well, is the Newt "quitting" or just "suspending"?
Another question: if a fellow announces in advance by a week or so that he is "suspending" his campaign for president, does that imply he will be balls out campaigning until that date arrives? Or has he effectively "suspended" it the moment he announces a date he plans to "suspend" it?
