Their was a discussion on Hot Air today about politics and culture: http://hotair.com/archives/2015/04/19/how-much-does-popular-culture-actually-drive-politics/ (http://hotair.com/archives/2015/04/19/how-much-does-popular-culture-actually-drive-politics/) . There was also an article in the Washington Times about pressure on the Marine Corps to lower officer standards because no women could pass them: http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/apr/19/marine-corps-weighs-lower-standards-for-women-afte/ (http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2015/apr/19/marine-corps-weighs-lower-standards-for-women-afte/) . While reading it something else popped into my consciousness, a trope called "Waif Fu": https://allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/Waif_Fu (https://allthetropes.orain.org/wiki/Waif_Fu) . We've all seen it. It's the scene in the movie where a 98lb women is whipping 250lb bruisers (see "River" in "Serenity"). I began to wonder how often can you see that trope repeated before you begin to believe that physical strength has noting to do with combat. Especially if you have never been in the infantry and had to carry around all the crap, they hump around. The same thing can be said about the ongoing Gay Rights battle. Gays are shown so often in the culture, that society at large overestimates their numbers. There have been estimates as high as 40%, when in reality it's around 3%. How often do you see a businessman on TV kill someone to settle a business dispute. Breitbart said that: "Politics is downstream from culture". Is it possible that our culture has people believing up is down, or standing in two feet of snow complain about "Global Warming". Has culture distort reality out of all recognition?

I think it tries, but doesn't succeed, because we inherently know what is real. A 98lbs girl can't carry a 250lbs guy around. It would be like people thinking a man can fly around the Earth really fast to change the rotation, like in Superman. We know what's real.

This is akin to what I was trying to point out in the "Entertainment" section of our forum..
TIME's list of 100 most powerful people in the U.S. contained Kim Kardashian and Kanye West..... two of the most despicable people in our Country. Yet THEY wield an incredible amount of power and influence in our culture and political thinking.
In answer to your question..... "Has culture distorted reality out of all recognition?"
The short answer is YES.

Yes you know there is no "Superman". And most of us understand the science involved in reversing the rotation of the Earth (Earthquakes measuring 15 on the richter scale and tsunamis like "2012"); but things that are even slightly within the realm of possibility, endlessly repeated, will eventually have there effect. Even if only subconsciously.

The thing that really irritates me about Dims and AGW, is their historic ignorance. They don't seem to know that for the majority of it's existence, the Earth was much warmer than it is now. Like the entire Mesozoic for example. Yes, we've had Ice Ages and even a couple of "Snowball Earths"; but mostly warm to very hot.
The culture wars are all tied together with leftest ideology and political correctness. Everything has evolved (as the left like to phase it) Margaret Sanger's views of eugenics as a solution to dealing with what she and her ilk considered genetically inferior indiviuals who were blights on society (her studies referred to the problems of 'the negros'). Margaret Snager founded the planned parenthood organization which is now one of the Left Wing's Flagships. Gay rights has taken traditional morality and turned it upside down so fast, that even Bakak Obama and Hillary Clinton "flipped" from their eposed beliefs in traditional marriage and opposition to calling whatever it is for same sex coupling. to be "a marriage". The "LBGT" movement now makes transgenders "perfectlly normal".
In the future, people are bound to look back and wonder how in the hell did the majority allow this tyranny of minority views!
It's too damn bad that faced with all the "real problems" our conservative candidates must address, that the social issues have become a live wire that all but the most ardent social conservatives agree must be avoided in oreer to have any hope of one of our guys being elected.

It is nothing but "gotcha" politics by democrats and the MSM. Any true conservative is also solidly for states' rights. Therefore, I would suggest they give one answer such as, "As a firm believer in the constitution I believe each state should make this decision and it is not one for the federal government". The obvious followup question is, "Well, what do you believe?" The response should be, "I am running for president of the US and as I just said this is an issue for the states". Will they be bashed for this? Yes, but they be bashed for any answer?

I heard Rush , today, talking about the media's gotcha questions; Questions designed to make our guys look bad no matter what there answer is. They are the sort of questions that never are asked of anyone on the other side. I loved Ronald Reagan's "there you go again" and Ted Cruz demostrates that sort of quick wit and good humor; making a joke out of thir gotcha game. So far, Rand Paul has had the best luck in turning around the issue of abortion of a seven pound "baby"...putting the entire left off their game and on defense. However, he has shown (and admitted) he has rather thin skin.
It's going to be fun and interesting to watch!

The liberals that I do know and talk to have a couple of items in common. One, is how they will ignore anything factual that does not agree with their belief. Two, their real hatred for conservatives, Christians in particular.

Because the media, arts and even the "sciences" has convince us that loud minorities are the "majority" view. Once in old Czarist Russia, the leftists (Socialists and Communists) decided to have a vote on an issue. The Communists waited until most of the Socialists were missing, locked the doors and held the vote. They of course won, and from that day forth the called themselves the majority (Bolshevik) party.

Joe Stalin once said it's not the voting that matters; it's who counts the votes...!
(kinda makes you wonder about the electronic voting machines...I recall chatter about making it so people could just vote online from their cellphones...what could be fairer than that, Comrade!)
