"Californians are left with a deeply unsatisfying choice for the U.S. Senate this year. The incumbent, Democrat Barbara Boxer, has failed to distinguish herself during her 18 years in office. There is no reason to believe that another six-year term would bring anything but more of the same uninspired representation. It is extremely rare that this editorial page would offer no recommendation on any race, particularly one of this importance. This is one necessary exception.
"For some Californians, Boxer's reliably liberal voting record may be reason enough to give her another six years in office. But we believe Californians deserve more than a usually correct vote on issues they care about. They deserve a senator who is accessible, effective and willing and able to reach across party lines to achieve progress on the great issues of our times. Boxer falls short on those counts.
"In past elections, Boxer has had the good fortune of having Republican opponents who were inept, underfunded, on the fringe right - or combinations thereof. Her opponent this time, (Carly) Fiorina, is proving to be articulate, well-funded and formidable.
"It is a dismal choice between an ineffective advocate for causes we generally upport and a potentially strong advocate for positions we oppose. Neither merits our endorsement for the U.S. Senate."

To my knowledge, none, she is mostly a rubber stamp for Feinstein.

It just goes to show the GOP either doesn't give a shit about that District or they don't believe that they can get a Conservative elected there.
In any case Carly screwed HP and they fired her for her incompetence so what next? Why not go into politics where incompetence is a qualification ......

The Skank was fired for lack of operational skills, arrogance, gender bias, and incompetence just for starters. Under her regime she took a once highly respected company and drove it into the ground. The Board fired her and HP has generally recovered but the damage was still done.

Yeah, know what's funny? ComPaq name came from "Compatibility and Quality", they had neither. I hated working on ComPaq servers, they sucked. Then HPUX and the 9000's were are workhorse and they turned their back on them completely. Friend of our family's was head of production at one of their printer factory's, he was there when they built quality. Anyway I'm glad to see HP coming back and also since they've picked up EDS I'm already seeing the quality starting to pick up from EDS. EDS really went to shit, but since HP picked them up over the last year I've been seeing their quality pick up, they still have a way to go but it's going in the right direction.

I never did understand the Compaq merger. I hated those computers, and couldn't understand why HP would dilute their brand with that.
Anyway I'm glad to see HP coming back and also since they've picked up EDS I'm already seeing the quality starting to pick of from EDS. EDS really went to shit, but since HP picked them up over the last year I've been seeing their quality pick up, they still have a way to go but it's going in the right direction.
Compaqs were the worst computers on the planet, hands down.
EDS was one of my customers too. They were a huge mess that place.
EDS, Christ how they love their Con Calls. Get on and all it was was a giant circle jerk were nothing is accomplished other than wasting time and money.
They are a classic bloated big company.
I'm not calling her politically dead until the election makes it so. California is one of the leftist of the left states, isn't it, or is it just some nightmare I had last night? I know there are pockets of Republican thought, but I've never thought of it as a Rep stronghold. I can only pray that you're right. I think this is the best chance she's had of being defeated in a long time.
Pagan really drives home the point about how liberals are such cowardly little scumbags.
If you are a muslim who might bomb them or a black panther guy who wants to intimidate voters then they are meek and mild. They talk about tolerance and do their best efforts at channeling Nevil Chamerlain.
But if you are an unborn child, a christian or a conservative woman then they attack you. They get really tough. They start thinking they are Charles Bronson or something. Think about it. Liberals really, really, really love to kill unborn babies. They spend billions per year to ensure that millions of babies die before they are ever born. It's kind of ghoulish if you think about it. And they hate Christians. Once again they will spend billions offending and restricting the rights of the religion that turns the other cheek. They get so tough when they know the other side won't hit back. And finally, they love to hit girls. If you are a conservative woman then you are fair game for the most vile, absusive behavior they can imagine. So listen up women, liberals think that if you don't agree with them then you deserve to get smacked accross the face as hard as they can hit.

When the Chronicle turns on a lib, the Bay area folks go into sheep mode and follow their lead.
Strangely enough, 85% of Ca is Conservative, but the Liberal Legislature drew up the voting lines to give the liberal hubs the power, LA County and the Bay are cover 15% of Ca, yet carry 70% of the voice.
They did this more than thirty years ago, and Ca has been going down ever since.

Isn't that the reason so many of the neighboring states are growing in population? The people in California are getting out of Dodge, so to speak.

There is a serious brain drain going on, business is packing up and leaving, in droves.
And still, the left does nothing to stop it, other States are offering incentives, while Ca continues to punish business.
I see so many for sale signs all over the place, at least a 20 to 1 increase in the last six months, some forclosure, whild others lost their jobs, but many just don't want to stay and pay the tax burden that is about to hit us.

Once again, I have no problem disagreeing with you and I have no trouble spending hours in an honest debate. But your reputation precedes you. You have a history that is well known. If you just want to vent your spleen and make us all witness the hate inside of you, then please do somewhere like the Huffington Post. You'll fit right in. But if you want to have a reasoned, rational debat then let me know and I'll be happy to join in.

Because there is no point to your posts. Really. Behind the personal insults you throw at these women, the underlying point is just stupid. Whittman did get fired from her job, but that doesn't mean she was stupid or incompetent. It isn't like someone getting fired from Taco Bell. She isn't and idiot and you know it. She isn't stupid and you know it. She isn't unreliable and you know it. People don't work their way up from the bottom to heading a major corporation if they are incapable and you know it. But you would rather wallow in bullshit logic hiding behind a personal insult. Once again, you neither entertain or inform with this horseshit. You just make the forum less enjoyable for everyone else. As such, these comments make you something akin to a cancer.
If you really want to worry about incompetent leadership then look at the Obama Whitehouse where no one was ever responsible fo making a payroll or creating a private sector job. Having these guys tell us how to run the economy is like getting sex advice from a geeky 30 year old virgin. They don't know what the hell they are talking about. It just doesn't make any sense. But where is your anger and your angst about incompetent liberal boobs demanding leadership of things they do not understand? Hmmm? Have you ever worked for a manager who didn't know how to do your job? Did you realize he really wasn't qualified to even evaluate your performance much less manage you? Now multiply that by infinity and you will see how incompetent the Obama administration really is on economic issues. But you don't want to talk about that. You just want to talk about how a self made CEO of a fortune 500 company is incompetent.
And then after you say all these things that are so clearly stupid while insulting people you could never hope to be compared to, then you have the balls to ask me why I don't take your points more seriously. Guys like you just wear me out. It's easier to give you back what you shovel on this board than to invest time and effort that will not be worhtwhile.

I stopped editing your posts, as amusing as it was, because Solar asked me to do so. It was only out of respect for Solar that I stopped. So you can stop playing the martyr and using it as an excuse to avoid answering what I am saying now.
And that's just my point. You act offended and say you want to have a real discussion and that I am afraid of your ideas and then, like a little bitch, you consistently ignore my points. Just like you always do. And this is exactly why I have trouble justifying the effort of a real conservation with you. You just won't hold up your end of it.

Well let's see I posted some specifics about Fiorina, oh yeah you edited them out.

She was fired specifically for Incompetence and is listed as one of the WORST CEO's in American history. This is from the Business community there Slick. You know if you could just put in a minimal amount off effort instead of Parroting what you're told it's right there in your face.
As for Obama ............ well please show me one single positive point I've made with the Obama regime?
Business Community's "opinion" on Fiorina -
Can Fiorina trump competition for 'worst tech CEO' title?

In other words, her employees, her shareholders, industry analysts and her own board of directors repudiated Carly Fiorina's leadership of Hewlett-Packard. There is a clinical term for people who believe in such elaborate conspiracies against their own person. Meanwhile, the truth is that, for all of her post facto justifications, Carly Fiorina was a failure at Hewlett-Packard.

Yep, trashing HP during her regime is an asset eh? HP canned her for incompetence and have been recouping from the mess and restoring the quality and name of HP after canning her.
28,000 – The number of HP workers laid off under Carly Fiorina's tenure.
50% – The decline in HP's stock value during Fiorina's 5 ½ years on the job.
8 – The number of times Fiorina missed profit expectations in her 21 financial quarters at HP; this was more than double the combined misses of IBM and Dell during the same period.
$42 million – Value of severance package that HP gave Fiorina in order to get rid of her.

OK, without using an opinion piece, back that claim up.
I lived near the Sacramento head quarters and know many of the employees personally, around 100 of them belonged to a health club I owned at the time, they shared their stories with me, so I do have some insight as to what went on at HP.

Pagan, to circle back, let me ask another way. What did SHE do that made her a terrible CEO? She wasn't solo on the Compaq deal, for instance. How is she a bad CEO.
Also, I wasn't the biggest Carly fan.
I've worked at the Professional level with HP for a couple of decades. My "opinion" of her is not a minority, bottom line is summed up with my previous post -

She was arrogant, biased, played favorites made shitty decisions like buying Compaq. She trashed a company that once had reputation of being one of the best, so the company fired her.
I've posted and backed up my opinion of her, so please tell me what makes her so a great "find"?

Why would you want this liberal elitist who is in large part responsible for the mess this state is in to keep her job?Sure just keep them all, and elect Brown the union plant. That will guarantee the bankruptcy of this state. She's a sponsor of the job killing prop 24 proposed by the teachers union, and backed by all the state unions. Pagan, to circle back, let me ask another way. What did SHE do that made her a terrible CEO? She wasn't solo on the Compaq deal, for instance. How is she a bad CEO.
Also, I wasn't the biggest Carly fan.
Me either, but she's better than having that special interest hag in the senate.

So Slick, instead of insults why don't you tell me why Fiorina was fired for incompetence eh?
Quote from: Pagan on September 29, 2010, 03:30:29 PM
I've worked at the Professional level with HP for a couple of decades. My "opinion" of her is not a minority, bottom line is summed up with my previous post -
28,000 – The number of HP workers laid off under Carly Fiorina's tenure.
She was arrogant, biased, played favorites made shitty decisions like buying Compaq. She trashed a company that once had reputation of being one of the best, so the company fired her.
I've posted and backed up my opinion of her, so please tell me what makes her so a great "find"?
Maybe I should type slower so your brain can process my question better. I too have plenty of insight of HP, and what you say is correct. She wasn't going to win World's Best CEO anytime soon.
However, my question to YOU is HOW is she a bad CEO?
- Laying off employees doesn't mean she is a bad CEO. Do you understand that?
- The stock decline -- why did that happen? Do you know?
- Missing "the number" from Wall Street doesn't make her a bad CEO, and in fact, I would argue the other way a lot of times. I am not sure you really understand what it means to make the number, and what some CEOs do to bring up their EPS. Educate yourself on that, please.
- Being arrogant, etc., doesn't make someone a bad CEO.
- Getting a $42mm payout doesn't make you a crappy CEO.
- Regarding Compaq, whose decision was it to push the Compaq deal?
Again, I am not a Fiorina fan either, but if you are going to trash the lady, PLEASE do everyone a favor and back up your position. Otherwise, you are just parroting corporate gossip.

CLAIM #1: WORKER LAYOFFS
Under Fiorina's Leadership, HP Nearly Doubled Its Number Of Employees Worldwide:
During Fiorina's Tenure As CEO, Hewlett-Packard Increased Its Workforce By Tens Of Thousands Of Employees Worldwide. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2005; Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 1999)
· In October 2005, HP Had Approximately 150,000 Employees Worldwide. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2005)
· In October 1999, HP Had Approximately 84,400 Employees Worldwide. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 1999)
HP's Employment At The End Of Carly's Tenure Even Exceeded The 145,000 Combined Workforce At HP And Compaq At The Time Of The Merger. "Based on both companies' last four reported fiscal quarters, the new HP would have approximate pro forma assets of $56.4 billion, annual revenues of $87.4 billion and annual operating earnings of $3.9 billion. It would also have operations in more than 160 countries and over 145,000 employees." (Benjamin Pimentel, "Wall Street Frowns On HP-Compaq Deal," San Francisco Chronicle, 9/4/01)
Since Fiorina's Departure From HP, The Company Has Increased Its Number Of Layoffs:
Shortly After Fiorina's Departure, CEO Mark Hurd Announced An Additional 14,500 Job Cuts, Which Represented 10 Percent Of HP's Workforce. "Hewlett-Packard Co. said Tuesday that it would cut 14,500 jobs, or 10% of its workforce, as the storied computer and printer maker slashes costs to remain competitive in an industry that it helped create. The restructuring, which will be implemented over the next 18 months, is expected to reduce annual expenses at the iconic Silicon Valley company by $1.9 billion. HP employs 58,000 people in the United States — about 9,000 of them in the Bay Area." (Terril Yue Jones, "Hewlett-Packard, A Pioneer In Technology, To Cut 14,500 Jobs," Los Angeles Times, 7/20/05)
"One Of Hurd's First Acts As CEO, In Flush Times, Was To Whack 15,200 Jobs – Then 10% Of The Workforce." (Adam Lashinsky, "Mark Hurd's Moment," Fortune, 3/3/09)
HP Cut A Total Of Nearly 40,000 Jobs After Fiorina Left The Company. "[H]urd will have cut nearly 40,000 jobs in two big rounds of layoffs since he took the job." (Jordan Robertson, "HP Chief Hurd Got Pay Valued At $34 Million In '08," The Associated Press, 1/21/09)
HP Recently Announced 9,000 Additional Layoffs. "Hewlett-Packard Co., the world's largest information-technology company, plans to lay off about 9,000 employees as it tries to cut costs..." (Barbara Ortutay, "Hewlett-Packard To Cut 9K Jobs In Services Unit," The Associated Press, 6/1/10)
Fiorina's HP Layoffs Were Considered Necessary To The Company's Future:
When Fiorina Announced The HP Layoffs, Analysts Claimed That The Cuts Would Help "Invigorate The Company." "Some analysts believe the job cuts could invigorate the company, which has been losing market share in printers, servers and PCs. 'We think it will be a catalyst for adding a sense of urgency to the business, which HP needs,' said Craig Ellis, an analyst with Salomon Smith Barney." (Therese Poletti, "Hewlett-Packard To Cut 6,000 Jobs," San Jose Mercury News, 7/27/01)
CLAIM #2: CARLY'S HP RECORD
Under Fiorina's Leadership, HP's Revenues More Than Doubled:
During Fiorina's Tenure As CEO, Hewlett-Packard's Revenues More Than Doubled. (Hewlett-Packard, HP Annual Report, 2000; Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2006)
· In 1999, HP's Revenues Were Approximately $42.4 Billion. (Hewlett-Packard, HP Annual Report, 2000)
· In 2005, HP's Revenues Were Approximately $86.7 Billion. (Hewlett-Packard, SEC Form 10-K, 2006)
Since Carly Fiorina's Departure From Hewlett-Packard, Experts Have Credited Her With Making HP A Stronger Company:
Industry Experts Have Claimed That HP "Desperately Needed Someone Like" Fiorina. "But while analysts praise Hurd's low-key style, many are quick to credit Fiorina for laying the groundwork. She was the biggest proponent of changing HP's culture, and although her hard-charging style ultimately worked against her, HP desperately needed someone like her, said Roger L. Kay, president of Endpoint Technologies Associates." (Rachel Konrad, "HP Is Hurd's Now, But Ousted Fiorina Gets Some Credit For Revival," The Associated Press, 8/17/06)
Fortune Noted That HP Can Thank Fiorina For The Company's "Breadth And Depth." "HP recently forecast that sales for 2009 would decline as much as 5%, but Hurd still is projecting a nearly 6% rise in profits. He's using the company's financial strength its balance sheet boasts $11 billion in cash to make acquisitions, like the $13 billion purchase of massive but flabby info-tech consultant EDS in 2008. He's also pushing the notion that customers need not shop anywhere else for their computing, printing, and tech services needs. He can thank his predecessor, Carly Fiorina, for HP's breadth and depth. She was the architect of the tumultuous 2001 acquisition of Compaq." (Adam Lashinsky, "Mark Hurd's Moment," Fortune, 3/16/09)
Endpoint Technologies Associates President Roger Kay: "Carly Deserves Far More Credit Than She Got." "Carly did a lot of the shaking up, which was necessary to get the hidebound organization liquefied again and that left the field open for Mark Hurd to reorganize. The ironic postscript here is that Carly deserves far more credit than she got. ... The idea that the organization needed to be shaken up and be less technology-centric and more customer-centric turned out to be spot on." (Rachel Konrad, "HP Is Hurd's Now, But Ousted Fiorina Gets Some Credit For Revival," The Associated Press, 8/17/06)
Former Intel Chairman Craig Barrett On Carly: "[Carly] Deserves Great Credit For Her Actions While CEO Of HP." "Carly Fiorina, the architect of the HP-Compaq merger and now a candidate for U.S. Senate, deserves great credit for her actions while CEO of HP. She understood the challenges of the marketplace, the dangers of the status quo, and the need for companies to move forward with bold actions to ensure their success." (Craig Barrett, Op-Ed, "History Straightens Out Facts," San Jose Mercury News, 4/4/10)
BARRETT: "Today, HP is a stronger company because of Carly Fiorina's bold action." (Craig Barrett, Op-Ed, "History Straightens Out Facts," San Jose Mercury News, 4/4/10)
The Compaq Merger Has Been Credited With Driving HP's Subsequent Success:
The Compaq Merger Helped HP Surge Past IBM And Dell To Become The World's Number One PC Firm In 2007. "But despite all the naysaying, despite an ugly proxy fight, despite Fiorina's nasty ouster, it looks as if the HP-Compaq merger that closed five years ago this week (May 3) might not have been so dumb after all. Last year, HP surpassed IBM Corp. as the world's biggest technology firm, based on revenue. It also passed Dell Inc. to become the world's No. 1 PC firm." (Bob Keefe and Dan Zehr, "Five Years After Maligned Merger, Hewlett-Packard Prospers," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 4/29/07)
The Consensus Regarding The HP-Compaq Merger Is That "The Merger Was Indeed A Good Idea." "In 2001, when Hewlett-Packard's then-CEO Carly Fiorina announced that the technology giant proposed to merge with Compaq Computer Corp., she set off a firestorm of controversy. ... Stockholders as well as the media were fiercely divided on the wisdom of the move. Not any longer. Six years later, after Fiorina's acrimonious 2005 departure – which many attributed largely to the merger – and the promotion of former NCR head Mark Hurd to lead HP, the consensus is that the merger was indeed a good idea." ("Compaq-HP Merger Was Right After All According To Stanford Business School Research," Business Wire, 7/16/07)
According To A Stanford Business School Study, The HP-Compaq Merger "Was Right After All." ("Compaq-HP Merger Was Right After All According To Stanford Business School Research," Business Wire, 7/16/07)
Technology Research Analysts Have Claimed That The Compaq Merger Placed HP "In The Right Place At The Right Time." "According to technology researcher IDC Corp., HP's global shipments of PCs grew by a whopping 28 percent in the first quarter of this year, while Dell's dropped about 7 percent. In the U.S., HP's gains on Dell were even more pronounced. While the PC business is fluid, HP is 'in the right place at the right time,' said IDC analyst Richard Shim. 'If you look at all the favorable trends in the PC industry right now, HP is in the middle of them.'" (Bob Keefe and Dan Zehr, "Five Years After Maligned Merger, Hewlett-Packard Prospers," The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 4/29/07)
Former Intel Chairman Craig Barrett On The Compaq Merger: "An Unqualified Success." "The merger of HP and Compaq was an unqualified success. It helped transform HP into the largest computer manufacturer in the world and provided a strong foundation for HP's current success under its very capable management team."
In 2009, HP CFO Cathie Lesiak Touted The Compaq Merger At An HP Securities Analyst Meeting. LESIAK: "Here you have a graphical representation of our acquisitions going back to 2001. And building on one of the points Mark made earlier, you can see the strong alignment between our inorganic investments and our company strategy. For example, Compaq's enhanced our scale in industry standard hardware." (Hewlett-Packard CFO Cathie Lesjak, Remarks At A Securities Analyst Meeting, 9/24/09)

Yet no mention that nearly all of the industry was suffering from the Dot Com bust, which is exactly why she was hired.
And her laying off of some of the highest and over paid workers in the industry, which she promptly hired back under contract saving millions, all the while doubling sales over he 5 year stint.

Well then post something to back up your "opinion".
Why won't you?
I have plenty of stuff to back up why I am not a fan, but I am not interested in that. I am interested in you backing up your slander of her, since you put it out there. I didn't slander her. You did. If you wish to hide behind opinion on the web, then fine. Otherwise, please give real reasoning to why she is incompetent.
If you slander another human being, then you should support it with your own insight.

Still waiting for you to post something other than insults there Slick .............. ::)
I have spent plenty of time giving you details and you've
played the same dishonest game the other guys are talking about. You are a clown. Pagan, if it's possible then take a long, hard look into the mirror. Ask yourself why so many people here express contempt and disrespect for you. And ask yourself why your life is so empty and meaningless that all you have is an online community filled with people who dislike you. Very sad.
Random thought. Why does Pagan view our disinterest and disrespect as some proof that he's won something?

Still, over time current CEO Mark Hurd has helped turn the Compaq deal into a success. H-P has leapfrogged Dell as the world's largest PC maker, and its shares have doubled since Fiorina's ouster in 2004. Robert Burgelman, Professor of Management at Stanford University's Graduate School of Business, largely credited Hurd (not Fiorina) for helping turn the deal around in a 2007 interview with Deal Journal.

Why does Pagan like spending so much time annoying people who do not like him or want to be around him? You would think the guy had some RL friends or RL activities that might compete for some of his time. Very sad.
