You don't have to take my word for it--read what I said: The whole "If I had a son he would look like Trayvon" comment was extremely racist because, from what I ascertain, Obama was saying his hypothetical son would look like Trayvon for no reason other than they would both be black.

Great point.  Black people don't have black children.

You get smarter by the post.

How is that racist? I really don't get it.
But before you answer, hit this one first.

Isn't it obvious? For the same reason it would be racist if a white president said "If I had a son he would look like [insert random white kid]" for no apparent reason other than skin color.

Bigoted, yes.
But I think racist is a bit of a stretch based on the actual meaning of racist.

If that is all he got out of what b o was saying and doing at the time of saying that.   Then he wasted a lot of time and money in college.

I learned a lot in college. I didn't learn much in the way of directly marketable skills though. And no, that's not all I "got out of" Obama's statement but I think it is a point often overlooked.

I'm being serious - what did you learn?  Also, how can you learn "critical thinking" from someone who has never had to think critically?

What makes you think my that professors never thought critically? I probably forgot most--but certainly not all--of the factual information I learned in college (doesn't everybody?) but, for me, the most valuable part of the experience was learning how to think logically and critically. I also learned how to write a lot better. So, while I may have never fully grasped Spinoza's Ethics, the improvement in my ability to think critically made college a worthwhile experience for me.

Most professors have never done anything with their lives, and have no real-world experience.  I'm not sure how you can learn anything from someone like that, except maybe retain what they say, and just do the opposite for the rest of your life.  I guess that's a way to learn in college.

What type of learnin' do you do?

Actually, logic is a very academic subject. Symbolic logic can be applied better in the real world than categorical logic. I would actually recommend writing out your arguments using logic symbolism and analyzing it using the rules of logic to see if your conclusion can be appropriately derived from your premises.

Logic isn't academic.  Why would you say such a thing?

What projects have you worked on that requires an aptitude for logic?

What do you mean by "project"? Legal reasoning is largely analogical reasoning. I guess my point is that I don't often find myself writing out arguments like math problems using symbolic logic or trying to cram arguments into perfect AEIO syllogisms. So, in that sense, much of logic is academic. But knowing how logic works is still helpful in the real world. Some types of begging the question and circular logic can usually escape detection if one is not trained to look for it. Oftentimes, an argument that involves affirming the consequent or denying the antecedent seems perfectly okay unless you know to look for it. A lot of informal fallacies pop up in the everyday world and in law.
