Drought saps California reservoirs as hot, dry summer looms
OROVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Each year Lake Oroville helps water a quarter of the nation's crops, sustain endangered salmon beneath its massive earthen dam and anchor the tourism economy of a Northern California county that must rebuild seemingly every year after unrelenting wildfires.
But the mighty lake — a linchpin in a system of aqueducts and reservoirs in the arid U.S. West that makes California possible — is shrinking with surprising speed amid a severe drought, with state officials predicting it will reach a record low later this summer.

How long ago was it, the Oroville Dam was overflowing and flooding?
There is no drought in Ca.
I know both of these revivors very well, and every summer the state would literally suck them dry to keep the Bay from stinking like a rotting swamp.
The Marxists use a non native fish (Smelt) as an excuse to flood the Bay with more than two thirds of Ca's fresh water.
Sure, it's dry this year, and it will only get drier over the next 5 to 7 years, then we'll experience another deluge of rain. (get ready to hear AGW every year till it rains again)
But we have plenty of water, the left just wants to protect their sensitive little nostrils by keeping a false ecosystem alive.
I say let the ocean return, the way it did for millennia, where the fresh water flow would slow and the ocean would fill the Bay.
The leftists have interfered with the laws of Nature by keeping saltwater out of the Bay.
I have written about this over the decades, and every time, the left claims it was caused by AGW, and that is one of the most ignorant lies ever stated.
There is no water problem, only a mismanagement problem, one created on purpose because they know people are stupid and never question authority.
From what you've said, living out there, for more than half a century, has there EVER been a "steady state in climate" - or does this stuff run in dry & wet cycles? Like 5-6 years of RAIN & WET, followed by 5-6 years of drought?
We kinda get that in Virginia, if the hurricanes don't bring us a wet summer & fall, it's pretty darn DRY!
I am expecting a lot of rain, in Southern California, this year. Maybe a hurricane or two. I don't know if we will be be able to save any of it.

Yep. Historically, when rounded out, we cycle every 15 years. But in the last 100 years it's been closer to 5, 7 or 10 year variations.
But it always starts with a deluge of rain, then each succeeding year, it gets drier, though on occasion we may be dry for a few years and get a light reprieve and get a semi normal rainy winter, but it always heads towards drought in the end.
And oddly enough we always had an abundance of water, because the reservoir system was more than sufficient, be it homes or agriculture, we had more than enough to waste and it was dirt cheap.
If my history is correct, 10.000 years ago we had a (300 plus year drought?) no rain, Tahoe dropped a few hundred feet, had an old growth forest now under water.
Another followed just 1000 years ago, nowhere near as long, but devastating none the less.
Damned Indians and their SUV'...

We're far enough WEST of the coast, the hurricanes that get us - outer bands of rain - usually come up through the Carolina's, hit the Appalachians, and dump on us. We'll get a day or two of up to 60mph wind, and basement flooding rain for 3-4 days. The Appalachians really mess with the weather, so unpredictable.
I didn't think California got hurricanes - huh.. I'll have to watch the weather map closer.
Is it a summer/fall thing like we get, or a different time of the year?

Based on the stuff we hear on the weather channel (or forecasts), California is either:
Drought followed by FIRE
or Rain and mudslides.
with electrical brown outs, or rolling blackouts.
and politicians blaming it on Global Warming.

It has been running about a 7 year cycle since I came here in 1975. It's always the same old bullshit story with each cycle too.
Also had our first power outage of the summer this morning too. That's another of their recurring bullshit stories. The truth is they simply can't find their ass with both hands and a flashlight in Californicated.

Been several over the years. The one I remember the best was Doreen in August 1977. I had deployed with my Guard unit on a fire mission in Monterey. Leaving my wife of two years and infant daughter. Fortunately They where able to stay at her parents.

Yep, al backed by a Marxist takeover of media. I laugh at the videos this site produces, and it never fails, they always make the claim it is AGW causing it.

IT's just kinda funny to me, California has so much beauty, and the people complain 100x more than they ought to.
Songs have been written about the weather, girls, cars, mountains, all the stuff someone from Nebraska, Oklahoma or the Dakotas long for... ...I guess they're content in Tornados, Hail Storms, and miles of corn fields.
Other than the pollen season (almost over), Southern Virginia or Western Carolinas, has the best of everything.
I'm in the Piedmont, 1hr to the Appalachians, and 4hrs to the Atlantic, with a gulf stream rich with fish, year round. When it snows, we just wait, and a day or so later, it's all gone. We've had power outages... hmmm... 2 this month (just enough to reset everything), but we're well prepared for extended outages, they're just that frequent.
I really, really am afraid of what would happen if we had an extended drought, and a wild fire. There's so much stuff that could burn, forests and abandoned homes... we keep the woods cut back from the house.

I take it, you LIVE in a heavily wooded area. What do you do if / when the forest fires are headed your direction?
Smoke is one thing, filters? And what if the woods is on fire, do you stay or bail?

Dick, are you in the city, or suburbs or mountain woods like Solar? How long was the power outage? I assume you have a backup generator or something to handle the frequent outages?

August is right in the middle of Hurricane season for us. We start looking at NOAA, way out to Africa and track them. Tornados give us no warning, Hurricanes... sigh, we get to fight with everyone, cleaning off the store shelves for food & hardware stores for duck tape & tarps. This year they're predicting more than usual - we'll see...

I'm out in the sticks like Solar but not off tye grid. 5-6 miles east of Nevada City, CA.
I've got a backup generator that handles essential loads and another larger whole house unit on the way. Both Genrac units that run on propane. They're way way backordered at present.
Yea, we will see. I would look to the solar minimums too. In 2018, right after the sun spot count crashed, NOAA's hurricane count was changed, lessened. There were no cat 5's in the Atlantic basin.
Found this on WZ.... cdc3 is the author:
"50 years of my life were spent within 10 miles of Lake Folsom, constantly traveling back and forth on Green Valley Rd. in front of Dike 8 near Folsom Prison. From the photos, the lake is nowhere as near empty as I have seen it in past decades, but it's early in the summer. The lowest I've seen it was around 1977 during the drought at that time. It was merely the confluence of two rivers at that point, with the foundations of "Mormon Island", a tiny Gold Rush settlement showing on the banks of the river.
Khaliforniastan goes through cycles of flood and drought regularly. It's not as though this situation is a surprise. But the powers that be have prioritized "protecting the environment" to keep it "natural" for "posterity", stifling the construction of new dams and sources of water which would keep the now huge population supplied. They have spent ungodly amounts on welfare, on trains which go nowhere (I guess that would make the Beatles "Nowhere man" happy), illegal aliens (nanoo nanoo) and the like while siphoning grotesque amounts of it off to the Brown family and it's dynastic Democrat minions since the 50's under Edmund G. Brown and Edmund G. Brown Jr, aka "Moonbeam" in the 70's and 80's and then (as if California hadn't had enough of him) from 2011 to 2019. Among the minions are Nancy Pelosi and her nephew current (but hopefully not for long) Governor Nuisance as well as the Feinstein Chinese conglomerate.
Excuse me while I take a breath...
Khaliforniastan is the poster child for the greedy, irresponsible hypocrites of the Lib/Prog Left who spout noble sentiments, paving the road to Hell for the citizens they bilk. They prate about the environment and destroy it and the living conditions of those in their charge at the same time. Over all, I fear they are the punishment of God on us as we have turned our backs to Him. I hope it's not too late to turn that around, but I think it very likely is. History is against us on that score..."

I'll stay, I bought the dozer for this reason, to cut a line on the fire and I'll bail to the creek if I have to.
I don't think I could stand watching the forest I've nurtured for nearly half my life, go up in flames, and not seek retribution from the SOB who started it, and yes, 99.9% of fire in Ca are man made.

Pretty much, when you look at the acreage map of destruction. A tiny portion is accidental, more is purposeful negligence by PG&E.
The DNC is responsible for that majority of fire since they used the PUC to control what PG&E does.
They literally stole a public utility trough threats and bribes via govt control over whether it sank or swam/
Now it does the Pavlov Dog Paddle to simply exist.

How could you leave out the California division of forestry and the Sierra Club? I'm betting they're feeling very slighted about now. Gotta protect that habitat ya know. And while we're at it don't forget the Costal Comission for that matter. I have a friend down in Carmel that isn't allowed to take down dead wood on his property because it's habitat don't ya know.

Why, they're all part of the movement to kick everyone out of the forest, they just hide behind differing acronyms.
They're all a bunch of commies. They are too numerous to list and they are all interconnected, be it save Yosemite, to save Tahoe, they are all branches of the communist movement.
FAWN was another group of commies that merged with the others.
This is my neighborhood, where we're still fighting to reopen the forest.

That's what my County uses now to track construction. Sheriff used it to spot grows, then sends out the chopper for confirmation, followed by officers and crew for eradication.
It's all about money when it comes to building, they want their cut for permit fees.
Build a 900 Sq' home, add to it a few years later and they'll be knocking at your door. :sneaky:

Here I thought I was just thinking ahead - they're already DOING IT!!!
Another reason why, if we ever move (unlikely), we'd build, but dig out a huge basement, and put a tiny shack above ground. Keep the whole site covered with tarps and nets during construction.
Privacy shouldn't come at such a great cost.

So, you used a bull dozer and made a big cut/clearing to get down to a creek? if the fire is coming down the ridge, do you have a Conex box or something to crawl into for protection, gas mask, or air tank?

A conex box would become an oven in a forest fire and you'd be roasted to death, medium rare.
I went through a mortar/rocket attack hunkered down in one of those things once. It was like being in a 55 gallon drum being beat on with baseball bats. My ears rang for days afterward.
