I will ask her to copy the recipe for me next time I see her.  Typically, we talk for hours, realize that one of us is late for something, then we rush our goodbyes, which is why I keep forgetting to get it.  I won't forget this time.

I know what you mean about the lye though, scary stuff, especially with my kids around, plus all the extra equipment you need that can't be used for anything else.

I think this is what has been putting me off from doing it.  But maybe this Fall during the cooler temperatures I will give it a shot.  And thanks for sharing....in advance.

Okay, I gave her a quick call, her recipe does use lye.  The only recipe that she knows of that doesn't is taking shaved Ivory soap and adding your own fragrance to it.  I googled after I got off the phone, but honestly, I don't think I am willing to buy a bar to make a bar.  I will probably try making soap at some point, whether I want to deal with the chemicals or not, for both the reasons you mentioned.

Here is the ivory recipe

I have to agree with you - buying soap to make soap doesn't make a lot of sense.  Solar has agreed that he will handle the part that includes the lye so maybe that will work.  I'll keep you posted on how it goes.  Thanks for the link for the Ivory one.  Toy

Is it similar to Fels- Napthe?  That is all the stores local to me carry for making laundry soap at home.
I was wrong, I tried Fels Naptha and it was horrible, didn't clean in the least, much like the crappiest bar soap on the mkt.
Though I did finally finish my bar of Zote, it lasted about 2+ months, I'm never going back to regular soap, this stuff rinses clean and quickly, and leaves you squeaky clean.

Oh, and Fels naptha also has a warning against using it as a bar soap, whereas Zote does not.

People, you really should give this stuff a try for about a week, you won't regret it, not to mention saving you about ten bucks for every bar over 4 bars of regular bath soap.
