Communist "Leadership" is all a facade, Xi was a puppet face for the world to see, but when the puppet strays from the Party's wishes/directives and believes he has power he doesn't, he's removed by hook or crook.

Trump tried to save him by claiming Xi was the leader who could get things done, but the party would have no part of that deal.

Remember, you can vote your way into Communism, but you'll have to fight your way out. We're not dealing with rational people here.

Here is a book I read. I left understanding what China was not. I was still confused.
 
The Party (McGregor)  This book is dated as there was very little censorship or tight control then. Mostly self censorship for career advancement.  Here was my first take away.  The CCP is like the Elks Club. You apply, if accepted, you start at the bottom. You work your way up. You serve on committees and do jobs, suck up, do not screw up then move up. A combination of elections and selections.  1 of every 13 people are party members.

The  party  is not the govt but a shadow govt. The army reports to the party, not the govt.  Every organization over 50 people must have a party member.   Very large organization must have a dedicate red phone  to party HQ they must answer in those land line days. Party can veto any business decision.

Some graft is OK. If too much you might get a bullet to the head. The party is very responsive to the will of the people.

Pres Xi had a father high up in the party but was exiled to the country by Mao's purges. Xi lived in  cave house. His sister killed herself.

In order to move high up you must serve as governor of rural provinces and also big cities and not screw up. Below is the work history of Xi. Compare to the history of US presidents.
