Back in the day it was a given everyone either had guns or at least had access to one or more.
Our school was at the end of town, so nothing but farmland beyond, so we didn't have a range.
When we brought our guns to school, we'd turn them into the vice principal and he'd take care of them all day and afterwards we could go hunting.

Note the term, "Take Care". This was not a confiscation, because it wasn't a rule that we had to turn them in, much like the locker is for storing our books so we didn't have to carry them.
We respected and trusted our VP, so he was who we asked to watch them.
