Quote from: Grammy on June 04, 2021, 05:34:03 AMI ask because I'll hit that milestone this year and I'm told I need to "sign up for Medicare".  :glare:

How about I just don't get sick?

So....  do you contact them or do they contact you, or how does it work?  I'm already getting tons of mail from what I suspect are "Part B" competitors:  Physicians Mutual, Cigna, etc.

*sigh*  I forgot this was part of the whole "Grammy" gig.
You have to contact them, it can be done online. When I applied, on line was the only way because of the virus. If I remember right, medicare will cover hospitalization, plan B covers Dr, visits and if you get supplemental insurance, pretty much everything will be covered. The ones I did talk to over the phone were very helpful, after filling out the paperwork on line, they called me just to go over it. They suggested starting social security a couple months before I turned 65, it was supposed to make sure my insurance would not "slip through the cracks", and coverage would start automatically at the first of the month I turned 65. Just some unsolicited advise, start now, it will not hurt even if you are several months away.

Smart decision Grammy. My wife applied for Medicare A&B last year and for SS this year when she turned 66 & 2 months. She was pleasantly surprised that everything went so smoothly. We do not have a supplemental plan nor the prescription plan since I am retired military which covers all of that.

My experience with Medicare coverage for the last 15 years has been pretty good. I had a heart valve replacement last year and Medicare covered everything with no out of pocket expenses for me. That beats any other insurance programs.

But be advised that some doctors do not accept Medicare coverage, you should check with you PCP and other specialists.

Oh, I hadn't even thought about the fact that my regular doctors might not even accept Medicare, tac.  You're right, I have to find out about that.  But your wife's experience is encouraging, it sounds less of a hassle that I've been expecting.

First chose a good hmo like Bluecross or Kaiser or a Big one with good hospital near you.    and they can set up the Medicare.  Total payment will be low and can be deducted from Social Security payment all auto deduction.

We've had Blue Cross/Blue Shield for many years, now.  Maybe that's a good starting place.  Thanks!

Great choice! I had blue cross blue shield and they sent me a nice happy bithday present for my 65th birthday, they jacked my premium up about 1000 friggin percent.

You people are all barking up the wrong tree. Insurance and gubberment involvement in health care with medicare is precisely what fucked up healthcare in this nation in the first place. If both were eliminated costs would all of a sudden come crashing back to earth and quality would go back up to previous levels where it was before the whole dayum system was derailed.
Socalism DOES NOT work. Not for healthcare or for any damn thing else.

The way to solve that problem is at the ballot box not by screaming at someone who is signing up for a program that they have been paying into for all of their adult life. So, I take it from your viewpoint you do not have any insurance or on medicare?

... thank you for that.   I'm really BUSY WITH WORK - to waste time, which little is left ... to be reading crap like that!   And, Yes, I too need to sign up for this program I've paid most of my life into, and have been warned, there is a time-slot for pre-existing conditions - or coverage can be DENIED.  Just need information, not judgment, thank you.

It would be helpful if people would pull their heads out of their asses occasionaly and used their brains instead of going along with the program. And and you say, especially before going to a voting booth.
I can't help having medicare coverage because it's shoved down everyones throat want it, like it or not.
I sure as hell won't buy suplimental coverage because in that I still do have a choice.
I had it at first and it was a real pain in the ass to get rid of. They thought they owned me body and soul and I had no choice. Like I said earlier I had to threaten them with legal action before they finally got the message and stopped bothering me.
