Hit here yesterday, we hit 95, while the valley was 10 plus over that.
I finally convinced Toy to take the puppies down to the creek around 4:00 Pm. It was in the 70s down there.

Today will be a repeat of yesterday, maybe we pack up food and sit in the creek all day.
Coming back up the mountain is like opening the basement door to the oven, you hit a wall of heat, within a 10' climb, you increase 15 to 20 degrees, and race to get in the house.

My place is typically about 8 to 10 degrees cooler than it is down in town about 1000 feet lower in altitude. I'm at 3600 feet. Of course we also get a lot more snow in the winter so there's a price to pay.
Crazy but not stupid!

Yep, same here. The wife used to complain bout the snow, but with all the supplies we have and the fact that she finally retired, now she actually appreciates the snow.
I just hate it because it buries all the projects I was working on.

Quote from: Solar on December 01, 2011, 08:53:09 PMWere battling wind gusts near 100mph, glad I have a forest as a buffer.
But the temps are weirdly warm and will be for a week at least.

Hard to believe heavy snow is right around the corner.

Unless of course that forest catches fire. I'm in the woods too but work at keeping a safe distance maintained from the house and the undergrowth at bay.

Funny, after 30+ years of busting my ass clearing brush, removing fire ladders up 30' and clearing the forest floor.
I still have absentee landholders as neighbors who haven't seen the land in 20 years, let alone clear the fall and slash. :glare:

Forest managment is expensve, hard work or both. This place had been let go when i moved in. It was a real fire hazard and I fretted about it constantly, especilly with smoke in the air every morning from nearby forest fires. I hired a land clearing/clean up outfit with a couple of masticators and a hand crew to clean it up. They cleared out the undersory and limbed up the dead wood. It cost me 10 grand just to get it to a safe state to start with. The following spring I put in 10,000 gallons of water storage because you can't fight a fire with a well and it's been work and more cost every year since though not as much. A couple of years ago I had a lot of downed trees and deadwood from the unusually heavy snow fall. That was another 6 or 7 grand worth if cleanup.
Then the assholes from PG&E comes by and drops a tree then walk away leaving the mess. It wasn't even close enough to their lines to matter. If they do that shit again I'll get a restraining order keeping their asses off of my property.

Ten grand is a real good price. My neighbor bought a masticator, the state reimbursed him under some fire prevention clearing program, but not before he finished cleaning up 1000 acres of over growth, 3 years later.

He died two years later because the work took a toll on him. He asked if I wanted to use his masticator, problem is, my property is goat property, too damned steep, you can only go down, circle the mountain, then start all over again.
I hired one guy dumb enough to go down, and start over.

Good price? I've only got 5 acres. That works out to two grand per acre to start with.
They did do a good job though and grinding the stuff into the ground is good for the trees left standing. Way better than slash and burn IMHO.

It took two units? I think you may have gotten taken. :sneaky:  Up here they do 20 acres in a week.
Unless you have really steep land. It's funny, they come in with a unit, only to discover rubber tracks were a mistake.
The reputable guys have metal tracks, $135.0 to $175.0 an hour depending, or bid the job.`
I thought about going into business doing it, till I found maintenance was an ongoing issue.
