Let's also tell little kids they can't drink sodas at school. Let's tell restaurants they can't use salt or the wrong types of fats. Smoking pot will be OK, since enough of the granola voters like it.

Dude, I get your point. But the irresponsible use by some shouldn't ban access to all. That's like saying no kid can drink a soda or no one can have salt in their food.

It just isn't your damned place to tell us what we can and can't do. Go get behind Barak Hussien Obama if that's the game you want to play.

You want to reduce car deaths. Then ban alcohol sales in all forms. That will save even more lives. Levy 2,000 speeding ticket minimums and 5,000 tickets for reckless driving like cutting people off. That will save lives too. My mother was almost killed 28 years ago when a truck driver hopped up on amphetamines ran a red light and broadsided her car with an 18 wheeler. Give a lifetime ban to truckers caught with substance abuse problems too. That'll save lives.

Dan dan dan...soda in schools are not a threat to everyone else only the fat kid drinking them...
So you guys are all against smoking bans in restaurants in bars and in public too then right ???
A drunk with a cell phone is way more a threat then the drunk alone....
Like I said before take all the driving distractions you can think of, then add the cellphone...
A woman on the cellphone backed out of a spot in supermarket and ran right into the side of my honda crv...caused two grand worth of dmg...She said im soooo sorry i didnt see you...I said you didnt see me because you were running your mouth on the phone and totally oblivious..

Zip, no one denies a cell phone can distract. So once again, let's ban alcohol. Let's ban makeup. Let's ban selling food or sodas to anyone that might put them in a car. Let's ban cigaretes. Since all of these things can distract a driver then they should be banned too. Right?

Dan take every distraction you named...and add the cell phone...not everyone smokes...not everyone puts makeup on...not everyone drinks...but everyone has a cellphone...proven killer more than all the rest put together...personal responsiblity doesnt apply and wont work....personal responsibility only works when MOST follow the rules and the law...there are no rules for cell phones...you either use it or you dont...and everyone does

Dan

We also need to ban car radios too. Anything that takes your eyes off the road while driving is a distraction and as Zip says anything that might distract some people must be prohibited by the government.

No, Zip, not everyone owns a cell phone. Keep one with a separate charged battery in the trunk for emergencies, maybe, but I don't even do that.

Now I see why you would like a total federal cell phone ban.  How about one for very small cars you can not see when backing out.

I have no doubt Zip is correct when he says a Cell ban would save lives.
How about Gov put speed governors in cars, so they can never go over the posted speed limit?
Or radios that only receive Muzak during commute times?

Point is, how much power are we willing to give the Fed?
Personally I'd like to see half the laws repealed, if someone wants to drive without a seat-belt, that's their prerogative.

My cell phone, like my firearms, while in my possession, have never caused harm to a human being.

Disclaimer; that is presuming I have, have had, or am now in possession of a cell phone and/or firearms.

One thing is evident, we still do not know where the line should be drawn.

Just had to post the dangers of Cell phones.
Not picking on ya Zip, I just thought we could lighten it up a bit. ;)

Then picture this on the roadside with a cell, now that's a real hazard.

And last but not least, proof that Cell phones are dangerous. ;D

Banning cars would save lives too. Just imagine how many car wrecks would be prevented if everyone was forced to walk.

Now I walk a lot and enjoy it (but then I have the time) and they keep trying to run me over.  So next they will ban walking in a cross-walk.

May not even be an issue in the near future.
WASHINGTON (AP) - Google Inc. is road-testing cars that steer, stop and start without a human driver, the company says.
The cars have traveled a total of 140,000 miles on major California   roads without much human intervention, according to a posting Saturday   on Google's corporate blog.
The goal is to "help prevent traffic accidents, free up people's time   and reduce carbon emissions," project leader Sebastian Thrun wrote in   the blog post.
It's not the first signal that Google wants to change how people get   form place to place. In a speech Sept. 29 before the Techcrunch   "Disrupt" conference, Google CEO Eric Schmidt said "your car should   drive itself. It just makes sense."
"It's a bug that cars were invented before computers," Schmidt said.
The New York Times published a report on the development earlier Sunday.
The Mountainview, Calif.-based technology giant has sent seven test cars   a total of 1,000 miles without a human touching the controls at all,   the New York Times reported.
The cars know speed limits, traffic patterns and road maps. They use   video cameras, radar sensors and lasers to detect other cars, Thrun's   posting says.
Driving between Northern California and Southern California, the cars   have navigated San Francisco's Lombard Street, Los Angeles' Hollywood   Blvd. and the Pacific Coast Highway, the blog says.
Engineers consider the cars safer because they react more quickly than   humans, the New York Times said. It said Google has not revealed how it   hopes to profit from the research.
The cars are never unmanned, Thrun wrote. He said a backup driver is always behind the wheel to monitor the software.
It says the technology is being developed by scientists who were   involved in an earlier set of unmanned car races organized by the   government's Defense Advance Research Projects Agency.\
