Before, someone SCREAMS that this is POLITICALLY off-topic--IT ISN'T!  It IS the psychology of this board (whether one realizes it or not and important to understanding the differences between the 2 sides).   The Republican was JOHN DEAN--one of the few who did, albeit, a commuted jail stint for his participation in the Nixon White House and as a Palace Guard--until he blew open the gates.  Dean wrote a book about 7 or 8 years ago (Conservatives Without a Conscience).  He discussed, at length, a 'psychological construct' that he was BLOWN AWAY by once he discovered it (he was well into middle age).  Essentially he said that MANY Republicans and his current party displayed this psychological makeup.  I had never heard of it until Dean's book.  I'll post a small sampling of the basics, (with links Mr. Moderator), and then this WIDE EYED GODLESS LIBERAL has to go Christmas shopping.  (Yeah, a last minute type!)

Right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) is a personality and ideological variable studied in political, social, and personality psychology. Right-wing authoritarians are people who have a high degree of willingness to submit to authorities they perceive as established and legitimate, who adhere to societal conventions and norms, and who are hostile and punitive in their attitudes towards people who don't adhere to them. They value uniformity and are in favour of using group authority, including coercion, to achieve it.[1]

Dean contends, and amply documents, that the "conservative" movement has become, at its core, an authoritarian movement composed of those with a psychological and emotional need to follow a strong authority figure which provides them a sense of moral clarity and a feeling of individual power, the absence of which creates fear and insecurity in the individuals who crave it. By definition, its followers' devotion to authority and the movement's own power is supreme, thereby overriding the consciences of its individual members and removing any intellectual and moral limits on what will be justified in defense of their movement.
