An entire year went by before the Chinese authorities realized that Russian gold miners had founded their own independent "republic" on Chinese territory.
At the end of the 19th century a gold rush swept the Far East of the Russian Empire and neighboring northern areas of China. Tens of thousands of prospectors rushed to the many mines there to dig for gold, an activity that was not always legal.

Sometimes de facto states with their own president, legislative and judicial bodies, as well as law-enforcement authorities and armed forces, sprang up around these goldmines. The most famous among them was the Zheltuga Republic - also known at the time as "California on the Amur", or simply "Zheltuga", which was founded by Russian prospectors of the precious metal.

Your biased bigotry precedes your arrival as akin to the stench of homeless liberals invading a blue city.

There is not one single likeness to the current `goings on in Russia or the CCP. These people literally created a new Republic state on no mans land, an area of dispute.

No one would have ever bothered them if not for the gold they sought.

That site is fascinating, the photography well done.  I'm trying to figure it out.  The books on Russia I mentioned in another thread talk about the ambiguity and corruption of Russia today. I wonder when Putin is gone what will come next.

Sadly, when Putin is gone, that will leave a serious power vacuum. We all know what happens when a strong leader leaves and there's no real law or Constitution in place, the people lose faith and the vacuum usually fills with fascism.
