Title: Taxing Abroad
Post by: dmf777 on May 25, 2015, 10:59:47 PM
Recently I have been considering a dual citizenship of Ireland and the US. My great grandparents were Dutch-Irish and I have visited Ireland several times, normally spending at least a month (many times 2 or 3) in the Emerald Isle. However, I also found out that even if I were to reside and work in Ireland, I would still have to pay BOTH Irish and American taxes, yet I would not have to pay Irish taxes if I lived and worked in America.
Does anyone know why this is and is anyone else aggravated and annoyed about it?

I don't believe in dual citizenship as it splits loyalties.  To me that's like being married to two different people at the same time.

My daughter currently holds dual citizenship with the UK.  The only reason she has not stopped her American citizenship is that it is extremely expensive to do so.   Why?  Because America wants their money!!!

If you drop your citizenship they cannot continue to collect taxes from you..... so they want to make it painful to do so!

It is not fair, but there are not enough people who fall into this dilemma to bring about change in our laws.  It is just another means of our government to grab money from anyone they can!

@dmf777..... Ireland is a beautiful Country but awash with economic problems brought on by their own stupidity.  Their economy is one of the worst in the western world.  Their unemployment is staggering.

I would think long and hard before immigrating to Ireland....  lovely as it is....

dmf, in another thread, it would be cool if you could post some Ireland pics if you have any.  I love looking at Irish countryside, etc...

I have personally stayed in this hotel and many others across Ireland.   This is the most beautiful of all of them... including Waterford Castle!

Blarney Castle is not a hotel but is a beautiful place to explore.
