It is known that Serbian King Milan Obrenović was in a romantic relationship with both Churchill's mother and her sister, but whether Sir Winston was his illegitimate son is still to be proven.

Winston, as a young journalist, was beaten up in Belgrade once for writing some bad article about the Serbs.

Historian Dragoslava Koprivica made the shocking claims after spending three years sifting through hundreds of books and diaries of the Churchill's relatives. American Lady Randolph Churchill, born Jeanette Jerome, had met Milan Obrenovic in Paris in 1867 when they were both studying. Diaries from her sister describe the strong love between the two, while letters from the Obrenovic family also make it clear they knew about their love. But Lady Churchill's own diaries have been tampered with – with Sir Winston believed to have ripped out pages with any reference to Obrenovic after his mother died.

She said Stalin probably knew of the relationship, due to a jibe he made to Churchill at a meeting between the pair and US president Roosevelt in 1945. Stalin cryptically asked: "Did one of the Serbian monarchs personally step on your toe?"
