Well and most of that federal govt is the executive branch. Even the military has alot of fat these days to cut out. Didnt trump say he would fire something lie 70% of the govt once publicly back in?

Benjamin Franklin stated that the, 'Founders gave us a Republic, if you can keep it'.
They knew the evils of govt, they also knew that govt was a necessary evil. This is why the Constitution was designed so that govt was only charged with one standing order, to protect the Republic! The Bill of Rights was to keep the monster contained.

I've always pondered the idea of what it would be like had we not had a Federal govt at all?
Would the States have gotten along? Nah, Marxists would have grown several states over others to seize power from smaller states.

Our Republic was a buffer against expanding power beyond the States. We have failed to contain the monster.
