First they'll start at the bank, locking you away from your savings. That's just to get you pissed, then when you complain because you can't make payments you argue with a bureaucrat who calls the authorities because you're mad you can't pay mortgage, utilities are shut off, can't fill your tank, or buy groceries for the family.

You're now officially desperate and because you've been collected up by local Mounties for displaying a less than appreciative attitude toward govt and placed before a Magistrate to explain your dire situation, he will be honor bound to remove you from the public as a protective measure, for it is inevitable, you will commit a crime for survival.

This is what happens when a functioning populace allows their govt to disarm them.
