Growing up I had to work a lot, as a kid, that is life on a farm, I was needed. I went to work full time when I was 15, still went to high school, still worked on the farm, I was still needed. Solar, I know you can relate to all of this, and I know many of the regular posters who are too many to name can too. I never knew how much I was blessed to have been needed. It taught me a work ethic, it taught me what a days work, or day and a half, or what a twenty four hour day was. I may have been a lot of things to my parents, if I was not working I had a tendency to get into trouble, but I was never a burden. There were times Dad and me could not get along, I could not help the fact that I knew it all, there were times I would rather work by my self and get the job done and I did often. But I never doubted why I was doing the job. I always knew from being taught that the job needed to be done. I realize now I owe my dad for that. Today's kids and most of today's young adults will never know the feeling of being needed, of having someone depend on them, of meeting that dependency even when they did not want to because your character will not allow you to let someone down, will not allow you to not do the job. I hate to say it, but today's liberals take pride in that, they pride themselves on what they need not on how much they are needed. I have something to say to the young, growing up as woke liberals, sorry but y'all are screwed. You have been fooled by a government who wants you to depend on them, and they provide nothing, no freedoms, no opportunities, no pride, no future. Most of all no self respect.

My son is now 53. I was raising him in the 70's when all this "befriending" of kids began to take hold. I am grateful we did not fall into that trap. My son did not like me a lot on those days. However, today is very loyal to me. Is hardworking and raising his kids as we did. I am grateful I had the courage to take the approach I did.

I agree, kids are blanks slates, teaching them, leading them is by far more important than coddling them, or giving them a place to fall when they get a boo boo.
I hated my dad in many ways but respected him in far more ways for his accomplishments. My parents were a team, they did everything on their own together and never included us in their personal issues.
We were kids with kids issue, we didn't get involved in the adult world of complicated bull shit, we didn't share in their issue simply because we had our own lives to live first, that of being a kid.
So many times I'd come home with my own issues, be it banged up from stupid shit, or getting pick up by the police for stupid kid shit.
Moms response, wait for dad. Dads response, WTF did you kids think would happen? Will you ever do it again? "No.......... while staring at my feet..." Good, then maybe you've learned a valuable lesson that you can apply to every stupid stunt you might pull in the future.
Sadly, the left politicized everything, so when your kid fucks up doing kids stuff, it somehow becomes a govt issue, be it CPS or another parent sticking their nose in your business and involving the govt. You are no longer the parent, the govt thinks it owns all children and can yank them at any time. And kids know this and use it as leverage.
