I have been following this conflict more than previous conflicts. mostly through telegram posts and videos as most western media did not allow such coverage. This bottom up coverage was different from that provided by the MSM.

I recently ordered two books on the history.

My impression is that the RU MOD says very little.
RU seems to be honest as they want to be taken seriously.
"Russians don't bluff."
RU lies by omission and under reports bad news.
RU accurately reports their own deaths but may over report enemy deaths.
Reports on RU military goals are almost always created by the west. RU shuts up about this.
RU does not have killing civilians as a stated goal. Kiev does state such goals.
RU does not hate the Ukrainians but viewed them a fellow Slavs gone crazy.
RU views RU and Ukr as one people. Zelensky even campaigned on this. Kiev thinks Ukr are a separate people.
Kiev lies constantly for PR purposes as they are never challenged. E.g. there were maybe 20M Ukrainian language books in existence. Another source said 100M. Kiev claims RU destroyed 200M of these in 1000 libraries.

If RU fought the way the US fought Kiev would be rubble.   From imperfect memory, RU recently launched around 200 drones and rockets and Kiev reported 14 people killed. I wondered why Kiev did not exaggerate the number.

If only 14 people killed with 200 drones/rockets then RU is not trying to kill people. RU often states what their attack goals are.
https://x.com/generalkellogg/status/1926674287819133204
This is Kyiv. The indiscriminate killing of women and children at night in their homes is a clear violation of the 1977 Geneva Peace Protocols designed to protect innocents. These attacks are shameful. Stop the killing. Ceasefire now.

Is Gen Kellogg serious?Libya Syria, Iraq, Gaza.

Here are some maps I found over time. They are as good as any in explaining the split in Ukraine.
When I first paid attention to Ukraine I noted that the Kiev faction IDed as a separate ethnic group from Russians. The Kiev faction said they wanted to drive the "Russians" off their sacred land in the Donbass even though they were then Ukrainian citizens. When the orphans from Donbass were adopted into Russia, Kiev said they were kidnapped "Ukrainians."

I think that the ethnicity of a person in Ukraine is self reported and/or hand written on their birth certificate as I have seen. It seems that Russian is a big city language and the language of an empire with lots of readers and speakers. Ukrainian is a rural/agrarian language. It is said that Ukrainian was almost never heard in Kiev 30 years ago.

The media has repeatedly shown this map by dividing Ukraine into South-East Russian speakers and North-West Ukrainian speakers. The source of this map is the 2001 census. It is important to remember that, when the census was conducted, every Ukrainian was asked to identify his "mother tongue." Around 68% of Ukrainians answered "Ukrainian" and about 30% of Ukrainians answered "Russian." By the way, Ukrainians who identified themselves as ethnic Russians constituted only 17% of the population.

[The map below is suspect as the self ID  of "Ukrainian" was tiny in 1914]

Maybe propagnda map.

Judging by the top right label, it was published in Molode Zyttja, Ukrainian magazine from West Germany after WWII. It seems that the nationality borders are indicated according to pre-1917 censuses, judging by the large Ukrainian expansion to the east and the presence of Germans in the Volga region. The cities are also named by pre-1917 names, so this is either a historical map or a propaganda one.

By the way, V. Kubijovyc, indicated as the author of the map, was a founder of the SS Galicia division. M. Kulyckyj was a Ukrainian cartographer who immigrated to Germany at the beginning of WWII.

Any chance of an English translation of the ethnicities?

Ukrainian is the official language, spoken by 70% of the country's population. Russian is also spoken widely and is the mother tongue of many Ukrainians, especially in the east and in the southern region of Crimea, where ethnic Russians are in the majority. Violent protests broke out in the Crimean capital of Simferopol on February 27, against the new order set in motion a week earlier amid mass demonstrations in the country capital of Kiev. Crimea is a bastion of support for ousted President Yanukovych and is also home to Russia's Black Sea naval fleet, based at Sevastopol.

2010 presidential elections

A contentious election in 2010 saw pro-Russia candidate and former Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych win with narrow margins over Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. Yanukovych won with strong support in the Eastern regions, with most regions in the West favoring Tymoshenko.

I can't even tell exactly the difference between and ethnic Russians and Ukrainians for sure and it seems neither can they. It seems partly made up given their marriage patterns.

Why Kiev wanted this war never made any sense. The current professional classes in Ukraine often speak Russian better than Ukrainian. I think the leading generals and  president are native Russian speakers and prefer Russian in private. . So they pass laws outlawing Russian, seize library books from schools, and prevent parents from educating their kids in their native language. In places like Quebec and 21 of 22 Russian republics there is bilingual public education not psycho wars about this.

There were village clusters of mostly rural people speaking Ukrainian at home as their first language. More in the center and west than east. East was more heavy industry. The first political entity having borders and a capital named Ukraine was made by Lenin. I think returning diaspora have created an alternate history and they wanted war over a mythical ancient Ukraine. Seriously. What a crazy reason for a war.

According to the Russian Imperial Census of 1897 on the territory of the nine Russian Governorates in modern Ukraine yielded the following results:[citation needed]
Early 21st century

In an October 2009 poll by a Russian political sociology company FOM-Ukraine of 1,000 respondents, 52% stated they use Russian as their "Language of communication"; while 41% of the respondents state they use Ukrainian and 8% stated they use a mixture of both.[15]

A March 2010 poll[16] by Research & Branding Group showed that 65% considered Ukrainian as their native language and 33% Russian. This poll also showed the standard of knowledge of the Russian language (free conversational language, writing and reading) in current Ukraine is higher (76%) than the standard of knowledge of the Ukrainian language (69%). More respondents preferred to speak Ukrainian (46%) than Russian (38%) with 16% preferring to speak both in equal manner.

A poll held November 2009 revealed that 54.7% of the population of Ukraine believed the language issue in Ukraine was irrelevant, that each person could speak the language they preferred and that a lot more important problems existed in the country; 14.7% of those polled stated that the language issue was an urgent problem that could not be postponed and that calls for immediate resolution; another 28.3% believed that, while the language issue needed to be resolved, this could be postponed.[17]

An August 2011 poll by Razumkov Centre showed that 53.3% of the respondents use the Ukrainian language in everyday life, while 44.5% use Russian.[18]

In a May 2012 poll by RATING, 50% of respondents considered Ukrainian their native language, 29% Russian, 20% consider both Ukrainian and Russian their mother tongue and 1% considered a different language their native language.[19]

In an 11–23 December 2015 study by the Razumkov Centre taken in all regions of Ukraine other than Russian-annexed Crimea, and separatist controlled Donetsk, and Luhansk, a majority considered Ukrainian their native language (60%), followed by Russian (15%), while 22% used both languages equally. Two percent had another native language. For the preferred language of work, an equal amount chose either Ukrainian or Russian (37%) and 21% communicated bilingually. The study polled 10,071 individuals and held a 1% margin of error.[20][21]

According to the survey carried out by RATING on 16-20 August 2023, almost 60% of the polled usually speak Ukrainian at home, about 30% – Ukrainian and Russian, only 9% – Russian. Since March 2022, the use of Russian in everyday life has been noticeably decreasing. For 82 per cent of respondents, Ukrainian is their mother tongue, and for 16 per cent, Russian is their mother tongue. IDPs and refugees living abroad are more likely to use both languages for communication or speak Russian. Nevertheless, more than 70 per cent of IDPs and refugees consider Ukrainian to be their native language.[22]

This is well known by most. In short, Ukraine and others had no intention of implementing Minsk. They used it to buy time build up the Ukr military. RU was duped. Now US wants RU to fall for another ceasefire and negotiations.

https://x.com/MyLordBebo/status/1926881758567358896
Putin was already tricked by Macron and Scholz at the beginning of the war:

1) Macron and Scholz asked Russia to withdraw troops from Kiev to sign the peace deal and end the war.

2) Putin withdrew Russian troops from northern Ukraine trusting Macron and Scholz.

3) The peace agreement from April 2022 was torn apart and the war took its destructive turn.

-> Now Macron, Starmer, Merz and Trump's neocons want to do the same thing again.

Not to mention that Putin was tricked by Germany's Merkel and France's Hollande into Minsk 1 and 2 into ceasefires, which were used to rearm and buff up Ukraine.

French president Hollande tells the truth on the Minsk agreements:

"Everyone thought it was Putin who was playing for time.

No, we were playing for time to strengthen Ukraine"

Merkel who was the second broker and guarantor of the Minsk agreement says, it was fake and just used to win time to arm Ukraine.

4 days before the Russian invasion (February 20, 2022) Macron told Putin that the Minsk agreements had no legal force and is worthless!

Macron smashed the last hopes Putin had for a diplomatic settlement, Emanuel wanted war.

And indeed tearing up Minsk & dumping the Istanbul peace talks is only the half of it.

Peace could have been achieved before the war started, & several times since, had the West & Ukraine not spent 20 years provoking an invasion.

Not doing the below would have done the trick:

- Breaking numerous written promises to Gorbachev & his team not to expand NATO to the east

- The US-backed coup in 2014, that overthrew a democratically elected Ukrainian leader.

- CIA maintaining relations with the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists, Bandera faction (Ukrainian fascists or OUN-B) from 1948 to 1990.

- Training of the Ukrainian military by NATO, 2015-2022.

- The CIA funded & helped to build, organize, train & operate many bases in Ukraine from which covert actions were run against Russia.

- The reality (recently acknowledged by Marco Rubio) that the goal of this was a Western 'proxy war' that would weaken Russia.

- The post-2014 government incorporating the Nazi Azov Battalion into the Ukraine national army—making it a mecca for fascist enlistees from around the world.

- Vice President Biden forcing the firing of the senior Ukrainian prosecutor poised to investigate his son & himself for corruption.

- US advisors (post-coup) embedded in 12 Ukrainian ministries, & $266 million spent on training Ukrainian soldiers—again to provoke Russia.

- Ukraine's attacks on Russian civilians in eastern Ukraine. (Footage of these was sometimes repackaged by Western media as Russian attacks on Ukrainians.)

- Banning use of the Russian language in eastern Ukraine

- The West's failure to speak out against Ukraine drawing up assassination lists for critical Western journalists

- Signing the Minsk accords 'just to buy time' (Angela Merkel)

- Dumping the Minsk Accords once Ukraine had had time to re-arm

- Refusal to talk with Russia pre-invasion

- Sabotage of the Istanbul peace talks post-invasion.

"The West is leading Ukraine down the primrose path and the end result is Ukraine is going to get wrecked."

- Prof John Mearsheimer, 2015

(2015 would be ten years ago.)

Ultimately this is a problem of state capture in the West. Our elderly constitutions (penned long before political contributions & monopoly media) can no longer 'see' the schemes by which that capture is achieved.

Put simply, Western politicians are paid to go to war, & Western media's role is to cover for them.

He says that US was arming Islamist rebels carrying out terrorist attacks inside Russia. i think he means the Chechens who blew up buildings in Moscow, took theater hostages and killed hundreds of school children in beslan on the first day of school. I linked to 24:45.

Great map collection you have there..

Up Until 19th Century 'Ukrainians', 'Russians' Spoke a Single Language

Modern Russian and Ukrainian languages are creations of the 19th century. Earlier East Slavs spoke a single language common to ancestors of Russians and Ukrainians both

When can we define the emergence of the Ukrainian language? For sure, our nationalists (as well Russian nationalists) try to trace the origins of language as far back in history as possible in order to support present-day political agendas. But when we speak about Russian and Ukrainian in the XVII century – it's like speaking about the concept of citizenship in the same period. In short, we automatically expand to the past modern categories and standards which did not exist at that time.

That is a good post. The reason I got obsessed by this was that I could not even tell who the various parties were in this conflict. I could not tell who was a Ukrainian. People in the Kiev faction called people in the Donbass "Russians."

I think ethnic Russians in Ukraine self ID as such. I also saw a Ukrainian birth certificate where the ethnicity was blank to be filled in by the parents. I assume native speaker means what language you learned as an infant. Many Russian native speakers ID as Ukrainian.

The Ukr nationalists seem to think that only the so called Ukrainians belong in Ukraine.

IMO the Russians and Ukrainians do not have a long running hatred. That was created recently, after USSR maybe after 2005.

The first political entities named Ukraine occurred in 1918 after the tsar fell. One had its capital in Lvov the other in Kiev. Both had borders. Another had a different name centered on Kharkhiv and one in Crimea. They did not last. Ukraine SSR was created in 1922.

In the Roman and Ottoman empires they mostly left religion, culture, and language alone which is why they lasted. They were not angels just not stupid. It would have been bad for business. The Kiev faction messed with all 3.  Some lawyer for the  Ukr Orthodox church said 1500 churches had been seized. IMO they were transferred to a sect created in 2019. The interference with language and culture is well known. IDIOTS.

EU Dictatorship Has Begun: Journalists And German Citizens Sanctioned
Neutrality Studies

This is completely outrageous. Under the veil of sanctioning Russia, the EU has just started to severely punish its own citizens and journalists from third countries. Two German and one Turkish journalist who have been blogging or otherwise reporting not only on Russia and Ukraine but also about the Gaza Genocide have been included in the latest sanctions list, the block passed last week. This means the three individuals have all their accounts frozen, can't travel to the EU, and nobody from the bloc can support their work financially anymore. This is DRACONIAN and it's not even a COURT case. This is the executive branch handing out severe punishments for the crime of doing journalism or people simply speaking their minds publicly. This is a complete breach not only of EU values and norms, but a serious infringement of the Human Rights (political and civil rights) of the affected EU citizens.

Somebody predicted the future for the Ukr conflict.
https://t.me/c/1633410280/140654
1. On the orders of German Chancellor Merz, the German army strikes the Russian Black Sea fleet in Novorossiysk and the Crimean bridge and Moscow with German Taurus missiles.
2. The strike unexpectedly turns out to be very effective.
3. German Chancellor Merz states that it was not the German army that struck with German Taurus missiles, but the Ukrainian army that struck with missiles produced in Ukraine under German license.
4. The Russian government states that this is all a lie and that in fact this is a strike by the German army with German missiles on Russian territory. And this is Germany's entry into the war with Russia.
5. The Russian army strikes with missiles on German territory, on Taurus missile production sites and their warehouses.
6. An exchange of missile strikes between Germany and Russia begins.
7. NATO declares war on Russia.
8. This is Zelensky's current plan, which Zelensky is trying to involve Merz in. This is exactly what Zelensky and Merz discussed on May 28.
9. Of course, Merz does not want missile strikes on Germany. But Merz hopes that Russia will get scared, so Germany can launch missiles at Russia, hiding behind Ukraine, and Russia will get scared to respond.
10. This plan has already been launched by German Chancellor Merz, who said that Ukraine has mastered the production of Taurus missiles in a few weeks (this is of course a lie) and that Germany has lifted the restrictions on the range of missile strikes. (This is, unfortunately, true)
11. As a result, if no one stops Merz, then the war between Russia and Germany could begin as early as June 2025.

12. Russia is trying to stop the German Chancellor with statements. About "red lines". Will it help?!

Translated from Markov's logic (https://t.me/logikamarkova/17521)

Also, this author describes how the Ukr ultra nationalists got so much power.
In short, emigres to other countries sent money to the far right groups to counter Russian cultural influence in Ukraine. Then western NGOs like NED pumped in money to these groups because they were seen as anti Russian.

The media oligarchs controlled most media and were mostly loyal to the far right. The far right armed up in part by looting armories and police stations. Then came the US backed 2014 coup and installation US picked govt. Some in Donbass rebelled as they had voted for the elected president who fled for his life.

Russia hoped for the Donbass to remain in Ukraine with some cultural autonomy but that was to much for the Ukr far right.
IMO They have some vision of a purified Ukraine and would rather see it destroyed than see it polluted.

1 in 5 Ukrainians have close relatives in Russia,

So. One might ask. Why destroy planes that are part of Russia's strategic nuclear deterrent when none of these bombers are being used in Ukraine and are in fact located on the far side of the continent thousands of miles from the front? Who gains? NATO not Ukraine. How did Ukraine get targeting information on these sites without satellites of their own? What's next? bombing missile silos?  This is a very dangerous game and escalation. The Russians clearly know who gains from this targeted destruction of one of the legs of their nuclear triad.

Ukraine's SBU spent over 18 months planning the massive "Web" operation that struck 41 Russian strategic aircraft today.

President Zelensky personally oversaw the mission, with SBU chief Vasyl Maliuk leading execution.

Sources say the complex logistics involved smuggling FPV drones and mobile wooden cabins into Russia. The drones were hidden under remote-controlled roofs on trucks. When triggered, the roofs opened and kamikaze drones launched toward Russian bombers.

SBU insiders stress that all operatives involved are already safely back in Ukraine. Any arrests by Russian authorities will likely be staged for domestic propaganda.

First, the SBU smuggled (or produced) FPV drones in Russia and hid them in mobile wooden houses.

These were placed on trucks. At the right moment, the roofs of the houses opened remotely, and the drones rushed to hit Russian bombers.
