Thing that's always bothered me about the Italian campaign. After Italy surrendered the Allies had un contested Naval supremacy in the Med. Italy is a peninsula. So why did they insist on fighting a long, grueling ground campaign all the way up the country. Why not just go around those places where your enemy was dug in? Worked for MacArthur in the Pacific, especially on New Guinea. It's almost as if they were determined to make it, as much as possible, an "Army Show".
