New Jersey Couple Raised $400,000 for Homeless Man on GoFundMe and Kept the Money

Kate McClure ran out of gas in a "sketchy" neighborhood in Philadelphia, and homeless veteran, Johnny Bobbitt, gave her his last $20 for gasoline, which he fetched for her. McClure and her boyfriend, Mark D'Amico, responded with a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 so that Bobbitt could get safely through the winter.

The campaign raised more than $400,000 in Bobbitt's name, but Bobbitt says he has not received the funds. The couple claims to have spent half of the fortune on lawyer fees and finding a house and vehicle for the vet, but the remaining $200,000 is still in the boyfriend's savings account instead of a trust for the veteran who is now living under a bridge.

Johnny Bobbitt is back under a bridge just months after a couple raised $400,000 for him — and then reportedly kept it.
It seemed like an American Cinderella story: when New Jersey resident Kate McClure ran out of gas in a "sketchy" neighborhood in Philadelphia, 35-year-old homeless veteran Johnny Bobbitt offered her his last $20 dollars for gas, which he went and fetched for her himself.

McClure and her boyfriend Mark D'Amico responded with a GoFundMe campaign to raise $10,000 so that Bobbitt could get safely through the winter. The story captured the hearts and minds of many readers, and the campaign raised more than $400,000 in Bobbitt's name. This, however, is where the story gets ugly.

The last update to the GoFundMe page described a plan in concert with Bobbitt's "lawyer" and "financial adviser" to acquire a home and vehicle for him. However, Bobbitt said he never spoke to a lawyer and only met a financial adviser once. The couple claims to have already spent half the money on him in that time — but their story does not seem to check out.

Rather than putting the money into trusts, as was explicitly stated, the remaining $200,000 is held in one of D'Amico's savings accounts. While Bobbitt lives under a bridge, McClure has purchased a new BMW and taken vacations to California, Florida, and Las Vegas — all, she claims, on the salary of a receptionist for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

It seems there should be some fraud charges in this story somewhere.

Yeah, I was trying to find an update but nothing.

Yes, the fact it didn't go in a trust screams fraud and one would think that would be a part of the process of asking for donations, or in the least, a bank account set up in the recipient's name with his permission.
I think they had the best of intentions, but when the money started pouring in, they showed their true colors.

Keep us informed. This was the first time I had heard anything about this.

Still, too many questions. Makes me even wonder if the whole thing wasn't a con from the beginning.

If it was a con, they were sure stupid in pulling it off.

I don't know. How many women run out of gas in a bad part of town, don't have a triple A card, or a phone to call for help?
That's just for openers.

I don't doubt it was a con, it was pulled off as stupidly as it could have been, from the original story to how a bank account was never set up.

She comes off as truthful as Susan Smith, the bitch that drown her own boys.
There appears to be that same narcissism in the eyes.

I remember when that happened. Some articles you never forget. It does not get anymore evil than to kill your own children

UPDATE:

Police raid New Jersey couple's home after $400G in GoFundMe cash they raised for homeless veteran disappears

Police raided the home Thursday of a New Jersey couple who have been ordered by a judge to appear in court to explain what happened to the $400,000 they raised online for a homeless Good Samaritan.

Footage taken from the scene showed a shiny, black BMW car being towed away from the Bordentown property owned by Katie McClure and Mark D'Amico. Other videos showed D'Amico hitting golf balls off the lawn surrounding the home and ABC6 reported bags of items being loaded into a law enforcement vehicle.

Burlington County said a "search warrant was executed early this morning by the Burlington County Prosecutor's Office and the Florence Township Police Department at the residence of D'Amico and McClure in connection with a criminal investigation into the Johnny Bobbitt matter."

"As of this time, there have been no charges filed," Burlington County Prosecutor Scott A. Coffina said in a statement.

Superior Court Judge Paula Dow said the day before that McClure and D'Amico must show up in court next week for a deposition in a suit filed by Bobbitt over the whereabouts of the hundreds of thousands of dollars raised for him via GoFundMe, according to Fox 29.

Bobbitt's story went viral in late 2017 after he gave McClure his last $20 for gas when she was stranded. She set up a GoFundMe page for him, which raised $400,000.

This looks like a slam dunk conviction for fraud, but it is in NJ.

How sad is that, when fraud becomes the norm?
