It's been more than 20 years since, and I don't miss it in the least.
I had a good group of people, but there were always the jerks.
Mostly demanding women, "I want a higher shower head, I want child care, I want a bigger juice bar, I want better music in aerobics etc etc".
Problem stemmed from opening them in rich areas, people with money seem to be a bit spoiled, most of the women didn't work, so I think they were probably pampered.

I had my fill of it and haven't set foot in a club since.
I do miss working out though.

I belong to Anytime Fitness. I like it.  I recommend the elliptical over the treadmill.  Burns a lot more calories per minute and there's NO impact on joints.  My routine is, three times a week, sometimes four (and I once did it every day for 7): 30 to 40 on the elliptical, 10 to 15 on various weights.

Now, I will say this.  The first time on the elliptical I lasted about 5 minutes.  That thing works you a lot harder than it looks like it does.  Much harder than a treadmill.  Of course, you can set the resistance at various levels and I usually set it moderately high, but even with low resistance it works you more than a treadmill does.

And it doesn't cost all that much.  I think I am paying $30 a month.  Worth every nickel of it.  Nobody bothers you, no juice bar, no day care, no nothing.  Just machines, and the treadmills and ellipticals have these little TV's on them you can watch and listen to through your own ear phones.  And a bathroom, of course, with a shower, but I do it on my way home.

I used in college. No one wears clothes in the locker room. Everyone is naked. WTF? Go in, change, then leave. I mean there were guys blow drying their hair naked. Shaving naked. Who shaves naked? If he dropped the razor he could be in the world of trouble. Then there are the guys that are only partially naked. They stand around in their underwear talking. Then one always puts his foot on the bench and every time one of his proclivities sneaks out for a peek at the outside world.

All of my equipment were free weight machines, none of the Nautilus or fad crap.
If you actually want to improve your strength, then go with free weights.
Aerobics is a good source for cardiovascular maintenance and weight control.

Too many people get injured from using only machines.
They look good, they feel strong and healthy, but the problem is they do not cover all muscle groups.
Hence the injuries, they go out lift something or move something, and instantly pull a muscle that never got a workout.

I haven't run into the naked people situation.... then again... I dont pretty much use the locker room very much as I live to close. Ours doesn't have the froo-froo crap like juice bars and babysitting , I go to Charter Fitness. 10$ a month, it has treads, the elipticals that I just hate... stationary bikes, these steps that move up, havent done that ye.  Then the other machines are there..... all kinds of machines that each work a different set of muscles.  Some one kind some a group...  They have free weights, I call the one whole section the dark weights.... cuz they are dark in color and I'm not ready for them yet. They are for the big dogs,,,I am still a porch puppy... they have light weights, again light in color. Its also a smaller section that has the mats and balls and balance half balls, resistance straps all that stuff.  I took advantage of the train session,,, so I do what he says to do.  I start with the middle muscle work out,,, flip to the upper leg then lower leg then lower n upper back muscles, then I have to go to the dark weight part and do some bar work (which is pretty funny but the big dogs dont make fun and they have even been nice enough to wait without gigglin to loud, lol),then I go to the balance stuff and the light weights, last always is the tread.... they are fancy with the tv on em, I watch the news, well I read the news,lmao...I'm pretty  much on 90% of the place.   I like it,,its very good for all things and I sleep better to.
