Today Solar and I lost a family member.  Our big dog, Butters.  We truly thought we were going to lose him two years ago but the boy bounced back and stayed with us.  He has been a joy to us and our protector.   There are so many stories to tell.....

We love you Butters - Rest in Peace

Named after the South Park character for a good reason.
He's sweet, always trying to do the right thing, dumb as a post, but he read the forest like a book, always kept us safe and aware of possible danger.
A wonderful loving dog, he'll be painfully missed.

Wow!!  That is always a great loss.  There just no way to replace them.  Each one has there own personalities.  They always have a way of lighting up your life and only all they ask to be part of your life.  Sorry for both your loss.  I do hope we get to see our  "fur kids" on the other side.

Sorry about your loss.  It's so hard to lose a pet.
The danger to America is not Barack Obama but the citizens capable of entrusting a man like him with the Presidency.

Our veterinarian we had on the West side of the state made small headstones out of block like below.  He would put the dog or cats name on them with a set of paw print on both sides of there name.  Then send it to us about two weeks later.  We had them on our  fireplace mantel at our old place.  We have them on the deck now.

Sorry for your loss. We do "senior" rescues from an organization in Upstate SC and we know what to expect, but the joy they bring offsets the ultimate loss. we have four right now.

Thanks everyone for the thoughts and care.  He was my boy , he was my Bud..

There is a spot on our road that will forever be referred to as "Butters turn".  Toy

Thanks much folks. As Toy pointed out yesterday, her daughter spent thousands on her dog at a vet in the Bay area, and finally had to put her down, they billed her a lot for the euthanasia and disposal.
Our vet yesterday did it all for free, and the disposal would have been free as well, but we wanted him buried next to his buddy, Shadow.

I agree. Our vet does not charge for euthanasia either. We have ours cremated and my wife has a special plot in the yard for them.

Cremation. Good advice, I'm actually running out of cemetery space. fifteen in all over the last 3 decades, and I'm sure many more to follow....

I've only had cats in these last three decades but do share your loss at a friend, companion, and source of so much joy. That headstone idea from Walks does bear thinking about: maybe you could pave a sidewalk or porch or something as testament to those friends you'll never forget.

Sorry for your loss.  Pets are such a big part of our lives and we always grieve when they depart.

We put our last dog in a pet cemetery.  It was free and we were living on the road at the time.  But I remember where we buried previous dogs.

When you move to Idaho you will be leaving your own personal pet cemetery.  That always is an additional twinge of pain to any move.

Butters was a beautiful dog!  I'm sure he will be missed terribly.

Yes, I like the idea, because in about 20 years, assuming I'm even around, no one will know where they are buried.
I think the sidewalk idea is a good one.
