We are confused as to what this is.  Is it a large rat or a squirrel without much hair?

I pray to God this isn't the case. I love watching the squirrels living their lives uninterrupted outside in the forest.
But if this is true, that rats crossbred with squirrels, then there's going to be a real problem when they start coming in the house.

Looks like a squirrel sans bushy tail. Has it been raining, could it gotten the tail wet?

Nope, it's pretty much hairless. The teeth also take on the appearance of a rat as well as its gate and extruding nads.

Exactly! But looks like a rat. I'm certain this is not the way things are supposed to be.      

Yeah, directly below where the rat was dragging his belly on the edge. is a spring fed creek, flowing real well for this time of year.
About a half mile down the road, it dumps into another larger creek that is also solely spring fed.
That's where we run the dogs to twice a day, but the big GSD stays wet and tends to stink.

Sadly you can't really see the full impact because they are so small, but I assure you, there are millions flying around the area, it appears that several hives hatched out about the same time.
I was surprised I wasn't bitten, because they do come out hungry.
