Snowed in!

I'd post pics, but you all know what feet of snow looks like.
We stocked up well in preparation, knowing it would be weeks before we could safely get out.
But Damn!

Anyway, BAY Area Trash head up Hwy 50 or Hwy 80 headed to Tahoe/Reno depending, but when the roads are closed, they turn to GPS.
Problem is, it sends thousands up my way to Wentworth Springs road, which is generally closed a few miles from my house, and they close it with a snowplow pushing up an 8'wall of snow ice, it is impassable, but also, the mile prior, there is no turn around, mountain on one side, 1000' foot drop on the other.

There are no alternative measures for crossing the Sierra, NONE!!!
The Donner Party found that out.

CHP finally showed up and stopped them in town.
One other point, all the locals are snowed in, so if these idiot libs get off the main Hwy, it may be another week before someone spots them.

Problem with my area is, it's all the mountains. One thousand feet up, 1000 down, there is very little flat land here, it's either a mountain top, or a canyon with a creek.
So when these idiots wander into the forest, they inevitably get stuck.

Watch the news, there'll be search and rescue teams out when it ends.

How long does that much snow take to melt? Weeks?

This is Ca, no one knows what the winters will bring. :bigl  :bigl  :bigl
Historically, it's been 50/50, sometimes it melts within a couple of weeks, but I've had where it was 6 to 8 weeks. I was snowed out of my own property in the late 80s for 3 weeks, couldn't get in because back then they didn't even plow any back roads, and I have a harsh 5 mile drive through the back country with a 2500' climb to Hwy 193.

This is the first year they ever plowed our road in, but it's still a half mile up and down to that road, and our road now has a couple of packed feet on it.
We're good, one neighbor has a tractor below me, so he's on his own, and the other neighbor lives at the top of the mountain, so they can always slide down.

We're sitting tight, I see no reason to bang up my truck, or toys Subaru just to go for a drive.
I love the snow, so long as I don't have to go out in it. I can't even get my Kawasaki Mule to the creek, it's just too dam deep with drifts.

Yeah, it's official, we're snowed in.

I just took the Mule out, made it across the driveway, tried to come back.
Holy Shit, that took awhile, all I did was plow snow.
I think I can plow the road a bit with the tractor, but the main roads aren't even plowed.

I hear the power is out up here, has been for a couple of days.

Check out this image, I'm in the brown. :stomp  :bigl  :bigl  :bigl

Your runoff goes into Lake Tahoe? Will your creek be able to handle the runoff? I absolutely can not imagine what those conditions are like.  How are you and Toy holding up??

Yep, we're doing great, plenty of food water, essentials. But I feel sorry for those up here who've never been through this. Most aren't as prepared as we are.
Little things, like enough fuel for their generators etc. Most only prepare for a week at most.
I hear PG&E can't even get in to find the problem on the powerlines.

Oh, and no, all of our water goes into the American river and into the Sacramento river and into the Delta out to sea.
I think right now the creeks are running normal, but if we have a sudden change of weather, there will be flooding.

The summit has around 20' of snow, Homewood ski has nine. The roads are closed over the Sierra.
But all in all, I love it!

QuoteCalifornia has been hit with an especially cold and wet winter, in which low temperature records have been set and the Sierra snowpack is poised to eclipse its all-time high.

QuoteBut the whiplash from one extreme to another is consistent with climate change, experts say. Since the start of the Industrial Revolution, California's average temperatures have risen between 2-4 degrees Fahrenheit, and the dramatic variability seen in recent years is a consequence of that fact.

Need a little help here, are they saying be careful when you turn on the stove to boil water because an abundance of ice may form?

These people lie with impunity, thinking no one will catch it?
I had this same storm last year! Remember all the trees I had to clear out? But it just didn't effect the entire State.
Then the last time I got this kind of snow, if memory serves me, was 1990 when I couldn't even get into my property for 3 weeks..
Wait'll we have another Artic freeze, or the next REAL Tropical deluge that followed all that snow, and melted all the snow and the valley flooded.

They all claimed those were AGW BS, but what I find so damned amusing, is their claims of "Historic" and fuckin thing is, We've only kept records for just over 160 years, and in gods time, that was a short pee. I remember watching the weather decades back when the anchor stated, "WE have been keeping weather records for 100 years" with pride.  :bigl

Every quake will be historic, every drought will be historic and it goes on and on, and the stupid sheeple will eat it up, because they love thinking the govt will be there to protect them.

I guess TV Snooze is Akin to a big govt horror movie. You know it's fake, but you love being scared half to death in a big room with others of your ilk.

Toy sat down in the bathroom and looked to see the forest below, but couldn't understand why she couldn't see anything?

The whole back deck roof had collapsed.
10X30' all hanging down on the deck.
The good news? We can still walk under it to get to the outside freezers. :glare:     :bigl  :bigl  :bigl  :bigl

  :scared:  I'd make that one fast trip to the freezer and back and run if I heard any creaking noise. I have never thought of it, but how do you get all that snow off the roof? Wait until it melts?

Unfortunately it has to happen naturally.
When I built the house, I engineered the roof to handle 12+' of snow, but only straight down pressure, if one side is removed first, the other side is out of balance and would literally flip.

So yeah, I'm stuck with it. Hell, I can't even venture out to see what else went down, it's impossible to walk more than 20', it's just too damn deep.

I'm seeing reports still lots of California in bad shape from the snow. Did you get hit again?

Ask me tomorrow. They're calling for more snow, but  there is predicted warm weather to follow, so it should melt anyway.
I'm just glad these aren't seasonal events, though it does happen every few years, it's still not the norm. BUT!!!
With the earth moving away from the sun as it does over the centuries, this could become the norm in years to come.

I'll be dead and gone, so fuck em all. :bigl  :bigl  :bigl

Gonna miss out on the battery operated bulldozers.   they run on solar power.

I'd love to have one, but those things drink tons of current to recharge.
Then there's the issue of battery replacement, which will cost half of what a new machine will cost.

Absolutely ZERO ROI for resale, unless you throw a new battery in it first, and there goes any profit in selling it, so you'll be stuck with it anyway.
Then there's still regular maintenance, or the fact that all the hydraulics are driven by an entirely newly designed electrically driven pump system.

Nah, these things will be a blip in a history of all the failed Green Bullshit!
