It shouldn't have to be said but, nowadays, criminals are everywhere. It would seem that criminality is excused, praised and defended. Here are some obvious things that one can do to be safer but, will not prevent any/all attacks:

Lock your doors! - It seems obvious and unnecessary to say but, there are those who for whatever reason, fail to do so. An unlocked door is an invitation to a criminal. Keeping the door(s) locked will not prevent any/all attacks but, it will slow the attacker down a bit giving you time to arm yourself, call law enforcement, etc.

Use the deadbolts, even when you are home! - Here again, what seems obvious to some is something others haven't thought of. Instead of relying on a cheap deadbolt, purchase a quality one, your life and/or your families life may depend upon it. You can spend good money on a deadbolt or you can save money by purchasing a cheap one and make it easy for the criminals, which one makes more sense?

Lock your windows! - Obvious I know but, check your windows often to make sure that they are locked! This is especially true for first floor and basement windows. An unlocked window is just asking for trouble.

Keep you auto locked at all times! - Here is another obvious one. Never leave valuables in your auto, even for a short time. How many times have you read in the news where a laptop was stolen from an automobile? Had they adhered to this simple rule, the car would have been locked and there would be nothing in the car to take.

Be situationally aware. - Walking while looking at an electronic device is a recipe for disaster! Keep your attention and focus at all times on where you are going and what you are doing. Being situationally aware is NOT the same as paranoia!

If you have a cell phone, don't answer anonymous or unknown calls or texts! For the most part, keep a list of contacts and never answer a call or text from anyone who isn't in that contacts list. If someone needs to get ahold of you, they will certainly leave a voicemail or contact you some other way.

If you have email, don't answer anonymous or unknown emails! They may look legitimate but, delete them anyway. If the email is legitimate, they will most likely call and leave a message or send you something in the mail. Never give out personal information without knowing who you are giving it to, why they need it, what they are going to do with it and who specifically is needing it. If you have doubts, tell them that you are not comfortable giving out that information over the phone or via email.

Never visit a website just because you got an anonymous or unknown email about it.

If you use some sort of social media site, never use your cell number, social security number or address!

If you use a router to connect to the internet, do not identify the brand, model or serial number of the router you use. If your router has the ability to use a MAC filter, do so!

Never use passwords like, "1,2,3,4", "dog" or "cat" as these are easy to crack and can lead to hacking. If memory is an issue for you, write down the passwords but, never use the computer or Internet storage to jog your memory. Do not use the same password for Internet access as for administrative functions on the router.

As I say, these tips will not prevent a crazed criminal from targeting you but, may make it more difficult for them.
