This is some of the damage at the bottom of our property.  And then some clearing to get down to it again.  Toy

I know there is a lot of damage that will take a lot of work, but those are some beautiful pictures in spite of that.

It is a beautiful spot... the creeks, the trees, the snow.  It is pretty for the first couple of days.     Toy

It took me 4 days just to get down there, the snow was too deep even for the tractor.
It broke my heart to see so many trees down, after having removed 10 bugged huge trees already.

I won't be able to get anything done till the snow melts, the tractor is stuck on another road in the snow.
I'll have Toy post some other pics of the damage. There's probably 20 or more cords of wood just laying down there.

These are some pictures the neighbor took before he started helping Solar clean some of it up - out of the way.

I know the moisture is good for the long run, but the cleanup is a pain.

Oh man, you said a mouth full... I'll be at it all summer long, probably 50 cords at a minimum.
I'll run an ad, free firewood, you cut and haul.

Wish you lived near me.  I just moved from Western Washington, where you can't spit without hitting firewood, to Southeastern South Dakota, where the only trees are in the shelter belts around people's farms.  I'm getting a really nice stove installed this spring and wonder how hard I will have to look to find firewood.  There are folks around my neighborhood who burn wood, so I assume it's there to be had.

I know what you mean. I could never move though and toy fell in love with the forest as well, so we're here to stay.
My brother lived near me, got a hair up his butt to move to the AZ desert, and it is true desert, packed up his sawmill and hit the road.

What do you do with a sawmill in the desert? Not one damn thing.

Anyway, ask about cord prices, it might be cheaper to order pellets by the ton and store for winter?
If I didn't have predominantly Doug fir and white oak, I too would probably buy a pellet stove.
Pine isn't worth the time of splitting. However, if your budget allows?
Soapstone stoves. My neighbor bought one, stoke it twice a week, that's it, and keeps his home comphy.

Though his holds 1/16th cord of wood at a time.

Here is the stove that I picked.  I chose it because of an article about Bob Vila's favorite stoves, and because it's so beautiful aesthetically.  I'm stuck waiting because production of these is very slow, and in the meantime I have started wondering if a pellet stove might not be a better choice, both because of the availability of fuel and because a pellet stove will burn all night without having to get up and tend to it.  Advice?  I'm very new to this.  TIA.

If I were to give advice after having lived exclusively on woodstoves over the last 40 years?
Go with rolled steel only!!!
That's a pretty stove, but cast iron doesn't last a very long time. Heat too quickly, and it cracks, get it too hot, and it sags or twists.

They're great if you use them in association with another source of heat, but they are nearly impossible to use properly when your freezing your ass off.
We bought two minisplits, one large for the living room, and a small one for the bedroom.
This way you aren't scrambling to get the wood stove hot real fast, but rolled steel doesn't care if you flash heat it, though they don't like super heated, where you can see the flames through the walls of the stove.

Ask your neighbors what they think, but I would avoid cast-iron at all costs. Oh, and get a pellet stove with a battery backup ion case the power goes out.
Hope that helps...

It does, indeed!  I will talk to my neighbors and also the company that will be selling and installing whatever stove I choose.  Thanks!
