Title: I may be the dumbest animal lover on the planet.
Post by: Grammy on June 07, 2021, 05:01:37 PM
I feel so stupid! All day long I kept thinking that this old blind cat that sometimes comes around starving had somehow gotten up into my car's motor and I've just been in tears because he has such a hard, sad life as it is.  During the ice storm, I actually prayed for God to just take him in his sleep because he can't tell where the predators are, and he just feels his way around, crying and hungry.  it's hard to even get food to him, because he's afraid of everything that moves.  This morning, I was sure I heard him crying from my tiny little Nissan Cube!  I opened the hood and I can't see how anything could fit in that tiny, cramped space but I'd heard loud "meowing" coming from there until I started trying to sweet-talk him and everything got quiet.

Then about an hour ago, I heard it again, coming from the car and stopping again when I got close.  So I raised the hood, left it up and then got into the car and just sat there quietly for about 45 minutes, praying that God would let me hear him again so that I could tell exactly where he was.  When I finally did hear him, it seemed to be coming from somewhere else and fainter.  Finally, a suspicious thought came to me (I think it was God, feeling sorry for me) and I pulled up a YouTube video.  Remember how I began all this by saying "I feel stupid"?  Well, I do, because I think I've been crying all day, not over the plight of an old, blind, frightened, starving cat that was hung up in my car motor, but because of a catbird that was probably sitting in the bush next to it!

:blushing:

I didn't even know that Tennessee had catbirds!  Apparently, we do (and they're very well fed).

I didn't either, really, but it was somewhere in the back of my mind today that there was such a thing as a catbird, so when I looked it up, sure enough Tennessee has plenty of them!

We used to live out on a farm where we had llamas and while I was out tending to them one day, I started getting irritated at my neighbor.  He was always doing stuff to annoy me, like accusing my llamas of being gay, etc.  On this day, I was mad at him for whistling at me.  Once or twice I could ignore but he just kept on so I decided to march over there and tell him to grow up!  About halfway to his house, I realized the whistling was now coming from behind me, so I stopped and after a while, I found my "admirer". It was a cheeky cardinal.

Grammy, this is what we deal with here in the forest, Pileated wood peckers, the very bird Woody Wood Pecker was created after.
I had no idea when I bought land in the Sierra they even existed. I thought someone was chopping trees in the area, I had no neighbors at the time.
Literally, about 5 seconds apart, you'd hear what sounded like a hatchet hitting the tree.
I investigated, and to my shock, there was a 16" tall redheaded pecker pounding away. The one in the pic is a runt compared to the ones in my area.
You should hear them pound on a TV antenna at sunrise :cursing: .

Seriously??

1.)  They're really THAT big?
2.)  That one woodpecker did all that?

Yes to all.
The tree was infested with bugs, and it doesn't take long to clear the pulp the bugs left behind.

I just had to drop another 5 trees because of a beetle infestation. I didn't even know they were bugged till I saw the pecker tracks circling the tree.

Regular wood peckers make a ring around the tree, while the Pileated pecker literally knocks chunks of bark off to get to the bugs.

The Pileated is not rare, but they aren't as abundant as the other species, thank God.
I saw two at my neighbors place two days ago, if I can, I'll snap a photo and post it.

I found four of them (paws)!  (So it was not a catbird, after all!  This little hissing, glaring orphan has been living in my Cube motor!)

I'm so glad I wouldn't allow anyone to crank it, while I still had doubts!  I caught this little one in a live trap today with a can of tuna as bait.  He doesn't even look 6 weeks old, poor baby.  I have no idea what to do as far as keeping him.  Chester will kill him inside and the neighbor's big dogs will kill him outside.

That's sad. In my county we have no kill shelters, and every animal gets adopted, in fact, all the kittens disappear, there's actually a waiting list at times, but it's usually a first come first served.

Good for you Grammy, I wish more people took the time and effort to help out our little friends.

I wish I could offer him to a good home on Craigslist but there are some sick people (snake owners) there.

I don't know how I'll do it, but we'll save the little guy (?) any way we can.  The grandbabies named him "Hershey" because he looks like dark chocolate.

*Barely* had the sound up, the DOGS went NUTSO.  Heard it across the house, came running in to either:
a.  rescue the kitty in distress.
b.  play with it.
c.  make it *stop*.

And, we have to cats, Queens, who won't take any crap from the dogs!  They're tiger striped, they hunt, the only rats and mice or rabbits we see, are "stiff on the porch".  Good luck finding a home.
Black or Tiger stripe kitten is right for us... two cats...adding a 3rd... too much.

Well, I expect I'll need to focus my efforts to get him a home here in Middle Tennessee.  I guess I need to take him to a vet soon.  Once my son got here to pick up the grandbabies, he completely ignored the hissing and just reached in the cage and got the kitty by the scruff of the neck and everything went calm after that. (I also have pictures of my son with a hummingbird sitting on his thumb...  creatures just like him.)  But the thing is, once the kitty was held and touched, he went from being defensive to almost listless...  sort of depressed.  I just went out before dark and gave him a little tuna but he only licked at it on my fingers and just lay there.  So that worries me.  😞

Hmmm, eye dropper and force feed him, he is too young to go too long without nutrition/water.
A turkey baster works best if he's big enough.

As far as water, I have one of those upside down water bottles attached low on the cage, the kind the if you touch the end at all, water comes out.  Do you think that would be okay?  I've left food in there with him, but I guess that may be a bad thing.  Maybe tomorrow I should get some kind of formula?  Or a soft canned "kitten" food?  I don't want to do something that will mess up his little digestive system.

Depending on his age, do you think he wasn't done weening yet? If so, then definitely yes on the formula, but I'd get him straight to the vet, he could have a bad case of worms. Is his belly distended, but not eating? Then yeah, worms.

He did eat the tuna that I used to lure him into the live trap.  I guess I need to run out and check in the morning to see if he was able to use the bathroom.  His stomach doesn't seem distended but, when you pet him, you sure can feel those ribs and that bony little spine.  I'll "just show up" with him at the vet, if I do, they'll work him in.

Happy to report that I went out to the shed this morning and he's used his litter box!  Most of his food was gone and you can see where he's "done his business" a few times.

But he still looks so sad.  Maybe that's just his little demeanor.  My plan is to take him to the vet to see if they can give him a check up and also de-flea and de-tick him, poor little guy.

Well, you all dodged a bullet.  My husband wants to keep the kitty!

We have a 9 A.M. appt in the morning to get him (or her, still too early to tell) to the vet and if we can get rid of the fleas and ticks, we're going to try to bring it indoors and introduce it to Chester.  We're hoping that he'll do better with a new kitten than he did with our last rescue, a Nebelung female that he never warmed to.  But we found her "human", and she had a happy ending.

Pansy (I named her), the Nebelung (below) had a similar story, she was found up in a car.  These people, living in a crowded apartment complex had her completely declawed, then decided they didn't want a cat and just threw her out into the parking lot to fend for herself.  A neighbor somehow found out what they did and went looking for her and eventually found her up in the tire wall of a car.  She took her to an animal shelter but no one wanted her (she was severely matted and had that Nebelung "scowl" that puts some people off).  I saw online that she was scheduled to be put down in 24 hours, so I drove about an hour to get her.  We had to have her shaved, but her hair eventually grew back out.  Chester was openly hostile and by the time we found her a home, he had only graduated to "resentment".

Chester's story is that he was taken away from a dorm of college boys who were throwing him in the air and kicking him like a football.  We don't know what else they did to him:  he's terrified of plastic bags, for instance.  He was in a shelter, in a cage with a tom called "Nigel" who was bent on killing him.  So, another rescue.  Except for llamas, we've never had an animal that wasn't a rescue.

Fingers crossed, everyone, that Chester accepts this little one.

Dogs are like, Cool!!! A new buddy to run with and terrorize the cats with.

Quote from: Grammy on June 10, 2021, 06:55:35 AMWell, you all dodged a bullet.

Quote from: Possum on June 12, 2021, 04:39:59 AMWell, how did it go?

Well, the kitten has something called Coccidiosis, which is some kind of parasite in the cells of the intestinal lining.  I guess they can get it from their mother's feces?  So he's on daily meds now for the next couple of weeks until he's pronounced clean.  All that to say that the vet wants him and Chester separated until then, as far as Chester being exposed to the kitten's litter box, etc., so they can only smell each other through the cage.  Chester's only giving soft little hisses, which is really good for him!  When we brought Pansy into the house, he growled like a big ol' dog, ha!  I think once we get the little guy healthy enough, they'll be okay.

Official verdict:  the kitten is a "he" and he's the same breed as Chester, a Long-hair American Domestic.  They're very "chill" cats, with a personality similar to the California Ragdoll.  The little guy's name is Hershey because, as the grandbabies put it:  he's sweet, he's chocolate and he's "just a little kiss"!

Oh yeah.... the vet said he very well could have gotten into my car while I was in town and rode all the way to my house!

  We picked up a stray, guess about seven years ago, about 4 weeks old, his ears were still pinned back so he could not have been over 4 weeks, must have been dumped, had to bottle feed it for a week, it too had coccidiosis, and ring worm and only God knows what else. there were three other cats plus the border collie that we had to keep away from the stray. We kept it in a cage, took it out daily for play, exercise, and treatment until it gained enough weight to get it on actual meds for all the problems the little fellow had. By the time we got it healed, and well enough to try to find it a home, he was part of the fam damily.

I love dogs in general, Hell, I love animals of all kinds, even the predators.
But yes, Shepard's live up to their name, they guard their flock, great natured, love everyone, but their loyalty is to the family, touch a family member and they'll rip you to shreds.

I had a GSD years ago that loved saving wildlife of all kinds, it was odd to watch.
But one day a mouse came in the house, I told her to get it Heidi, and she killed it immediately, 2 seconds later she cried, she was sooo upset that she had taken a life, I had to console the whole day, she was literally devastated.

She was just one of the special ones. She was a Sheriff K-9 dropout, they couldn't get her to be aggressive, their loss, my gain. I really miss her...

Yes, yes they do. I don't like aggressive dogs, I want one smart enough to recognize the difference between good and evil.
When it comes to recognizing avarice of the soul, people have lost the ability, but certain dogs are keen to it.

Of all the dogs I have had in my life time. The German Shepherd has always been the best.  Both in voice command and hand gestures.  The last one tolerated me as I was gone 10 to 15 hrs  a day working, that why we got the last one.  He was for the wife and kids.  As we lived right off the I 5 corridor.

I could come home and tell the dog to go laydown. He would just look at me, like who made you boss.  But let the wife or kids tell him something. LOL he was their dog 100%.  Let the wife or kids go to the door and he was right there.  He would sit right at their feet.  If someone moved for the door, he was on all four with a growling sound, until the wife or kids said sit.

Something to look out for in German Shepherds.

Degenerative Myelopathy.
"Genetic testing of the SOD1 gene in German shepherd dogs will reliably determine whether a dog is a genetic Carrier of degenerative myelopathy. Degenerative Myelopathy is inherited in an Autosomal Recessive manner in dogs meaning that they must receive two copies of the mutated gene (one from each parent) to develop the disease."

Find out if the dog(s) have been tested.  Know what your getting.

A couple of tips. Buy a West German GSD, they are true descendants of Max Emil Friedrich von Stephanitz, the creator of the breed.
My GSD Diesel is a direct descendent of his dogs. His dogs were bred for obvious intellect, loyalty, willing to sacrifice their life for their owner.
They were bred as true shepherds, they do not kill needlessly, they are protectors first and foremost, the flock or herd is their family.

Whatever you do, do not buy a AKC American GSD, they care nothing about the German lines, were bred them to bigger and stronger, sacrificing health by screwing up the genetic line.
It was just a few years ago they finally changed the rules after this bull shit, I came unglued when I saw this GSD, they had finally destroy the American GSD.
Point is, they were actually breeding in dysplasia.

Also avoid East German GSD, they are bred to be aggressive, they are not a dog you want around children.
And the Belgian Malinois is a bit smaller and also bred to be aggressive, and needs a ton of stimulation, they are born in high gear and die that way.

Expect to pay between 25 hundred and up, for a pure bred West GSD. But if you can find a mix, say GSD and a mellow breed, yellow lab etc, you'll have a good dog.

Hope this helps.

I wonder if the Degenerative Myelopathy is something that affects all Shepherd origins or if its unique to the AKC American breeds?  I'd better do a little research.  (And also break it to my husband that I want a German Shepherd.)

Yes, it is unique to the AKC because no reputable breeder would pass pass the disorder along in the blood line, but the AKC literally ignored it completely.
Virtually Every dog in Diesels lineage had been tested for the disorder going back decades, so as to assure it was stopped once and for good.

AKC was more concerned with aesthetics and it was literally bred into the dog. It's loose hip, floppy look, many dogs live through it, but it's heart breaking to see, because it was all avoidable.

Look for parents that have a straight back, no slope to the gate, the originals never had it, Americans bred it in, all for show.

Good luck in your search, I'm finding prices have gotten ridiculous around the country.

I paid $2500 7 years ago, she has raised her prices by another grand.

Check into a GSD rescue in your area, though they may charge a fee, the dogs are well mannered and placed in homes that fit your personality and lifestyle.
Some, not many were abused, most were neglected and never bonded with the owner, so you're still getting a blank slate to work with.
GSD is the easiest dog in the world to train, they come with a full spectrum of talents and intellect, all you have to do is work with their strengths, they'll never disappoint, they hate screwing up, they tend to be somewhat of a perfectionist at their assigned duties.
Praise is their reward.

I've been training dogs since 1968, I do have the experience, just not that much patience for other breeds, the GSD is the easiest of all breeds to train. They want to work...
