Short wave might be viable, but transporting messages and such especially in the earlier stages of an end of the worl scenario will be important. Does anyone have messengers ready in their family / tribal/ group job lists? How difficult do you think it will be to set up a group to group communications effort?

I only have a brother that lives near me, and my mom only has a few years left.
On the wifes side, she has two daughters, and both will probably head here for safety.
Beyond that, we probably won't need to communicate.

We do have long range walkie-talkies, so we can still stay in touch with the neighbors, but if its an EMP blast, all bets are off.

Gyro-copters would be especially useful for this. They are easier to fly than helicopters and can land in small clearings unlike airplanes. They also don't need much fuel.
