If you want to know what's going on with the lack of ammunition at the moment, there are few folks with more knowledge of the situation than Jason Hornady. The vice-president of Hornady Manufacturing recently put out a video that helps to put the surge in ammo sales into perspective.

Hornady says that ammunition sales first spiked in March, when the company saw an 86% increase over March of 2019. That, in essence, wiped out the company's inventory, and they've been making and shipping as fast as they can ever since.

"The stuff that goes out today was literally put in a box yesterday," he explains. "We've made one-third more ammunition than we did last year. Unfortunately we don't have an extra factory laying around or anything else. We've got 'X' number of people, and we're certainly trying to add as much capacity as we can."

Heard the same thing.  at THESE prices, if you're buying, it's for one of two reasons:
a.  You believe the prices will never, ever, ever, come down - maybe because of Harris-Biden (I pity you, above all).
b.  You're simply OUT of ammo, or components - and you're not "stocking up" but keeping just enough to hunt/play with.

If you're just starting to buy ammo & guns - whoa...!   Visit a few gun shows, and look around - they're taking advantage of people's panic buying.
For instance... we saw this last Saturday at the Kingsport, TN gun show.
CCI small rifle primers (for reloading 223/5.56), $175 per 1000!   Normally, this is a $25-35.
Ruger 10-22, carbine... the cheapest of the really cheap versions, $650.
1000 rounds of .223 Range Brass, just $120.   normally a $10 or "free" item, now even grungy looking "mixed" brass that's been stepped on, rain soaked, corroded has a value.
Fiocchi .223, 62gr FMJ, 500rnds = $400 (that's $0.80 per shot!)... last February it cost .28 per shot.
Take any shotgun - if you can FIND THEM at a gun show, and triple the price.
Anything that starts with "AR", complete, or parts, add 50% to the "online" price for these "used" guns/parts.

And the kicker, a box of 25 shot gun, 7.5 shot shells for 20 or 12guage  - "Trap loads" by Winchester... just $12.95!   Walmart has the EXACT same thing, but 100rnds for $22.

If you *must* buy, and know "now is not a good time to buy" - by every means possible, shop around.
Wifey & I love to walk around the Gun Shows, window shopping, usually not buying anything.   We've managed to "sell" a lot of 30yr old BRASS - enough to pay for the gas, door charges, drinks... so they cost us ZERO.   Kingsport was very typical of the last 5 shows we've attended in 2 months, vendors are ripping people off.

And if you're wondering, "Are the vendors to blame for these high prices...?"   Gun Show TABLES are also UP!   $65-85 per table at all 5 shows we've attended this winter.  Everyone is cashing in.
