The main reason I chose a reputable breeder was to avoid an AKC purebred, you're guaranteed health issues and a shortened life span. This is why I went with a breed with a direct connection to the original creator of the GSD
AKC breeders were literally destroying the Shepard, all in an effort to produce a certain look and Intellect be damned and screw their health, these people are sick and need to be put out of business!!!

The AKC is packed full of snobs, they refused to even recognize the original German Shepard bloodline, instead they went with an American line, Which They Destroyed!
All my GSD tie directly back to Max Von Stephanitz, the actual creator of the German Shepard line.

I will Google that. Maybe there is an East coast breeder.
Have you ever had a guy threaten
to beat you to death with his leg?
Because I have, and it's not pretty.

I had a belgian malinois as young teen growing up in Washington state, best dog I've ever had. I still thing about him all the time. A truly great friend.

Are there any obvious physical differences between the AKC and original GSD Sheppard's? Also what are the two temperaments like?

The Malinois is usually smaller and much more agile, that's why many love them for search and rescue, and yes, they are loyal and smart as Hell, but, they need the attention of a 10 year old boy with as much energy as they have.

The AKC has been bred with physical issues which cut their life short, be it dysplasia or size, their heart can't handle the extra muscle mass, most AKC have much shorter lives. I love the AKC Shepard, they're great dogs and very smart, but you literally only get 6 or 7 really good years out of them and it's a short life after that, with a lot of health issues..

The East German breed is literally, the same breed their creator (von Stephanitz) wanted, a well rounded dog designed with loyalty to the owner, willing to give their life for their flock be it a child in the family or his livestock, they take work and play as the essence of their life, and smart as fuck.

I just picked up a Czechoslovakian/East German Shepard, though smart and tough, they're like the Malinois, only bigger.
He's a big puppy, kinda smart in many ways, but his focus is on work, he needs a job real bad, but the previous owners had no clue what they had and pretty much ruined him, so I have a lot of work ahead.

If you decide on a GSD, be sure and research the breeder and what their intentions were for their particular line, be it working, protection or family dog.
It's easy to get a GSD with more energy than you may want, and the dog becomes bored which translates into very destructive behavior, even a biter if they feel neglected, they need to bond with someone or they're lost.

The one I just picked up never bonded with anyone, so he's discovering an entirely new world.
I feel sorry for him, his first 4 years have literally been spent in pens.
But he's doing great, he has a family for the first time in his life.

I bet he is feeling very happy now, that's great! I've always loved these types of dogs but they do require a very active lifestyle (job) so I probably won't get another. My Malinois was an amazing athlete he could do things I've never seen another dog do, and I only saw him get truly angry once. He was protecting me so fiercely even though he was my constant companion I was shocked. He was never aggressive with strangers or other dogs but when this prick came after me Chucky would have killed him.

These are the type of pictures that I love to look at. They do speak a thousand words of life.

Great looking pups...............
People sleep peacefully at night because there are a few tough men prepared to do violence on their behalf.

A foolish man complains about his torn pockets.

A wise man uses it to scratch his balls.

I had a Dutch Sheppard named Rosco which is basically the same type of dog like your Belgian Malinois. The Dutch put together a great all around family dog that will protect and love your family. The most important thing about these type of dogs IMO....you have to be a very active family or all hell will break loose.

Solar and I have both been sick the last few days.  So the usual morning hike with me hasn't been happening.  But either Solar or I will run these two in the late afternoon with the quad just to burn up some of that energy.

Thanks, this really is representative of our time here in the forest.
I just wish I had the health to do what I used to do, but Hell, that's all a part of growing old. :cursing:

I was an only child and 'Chucky was the best friend a teenager could have. He did need to run and play a lot but so did I.
