Love the old tech, yes, but what really fascinated me was the quality of that soil!!!  Black earth.  Rich in everything wonderful.  The soil here is brown clay.  Gardens here are very labor-intensive because you must first replace just about all the topsoil.

Same here SueAnne. I moved from the rich California valley flood plain, where the land was previously Indian hunting grounds.
As a kid I found arrow heads in the rich black dirt in the backyard.
Then I move to the Sierra, where the soil is ancient river and lake bottom upturned as the land lifted into mtn ranges.
Long story short, there is no real soil, just broken down clay atop shale and quartz.
Top soil is not cheap, and the worst part, is the clay you covered is like a sponge, literally sucks the water right out of the soil.
