If you have ANY type of personal data stored on any system other than one you directly control, you WILL eventually lose access to this data: Company goes out of business, changes access policy, gets hacked, etc... Plan on keeping your personal data on at least two backups as well as the original source to make sure you can access this data in the future. Here is a good example of what can happen, although this one has somewhat of a happy ending:

TLDR: Company told users that they would be deleting photos from dormant accounts by a certain date. Company deleted account data on that date. Users raise hell with the company and they "restored" the data and postponed the end date for dormant account deletion.

Here is a link that describes some good backup options.  I personally use local backup drives and a NAS that is also backed up.  While Internet and Cloud are also options, I would not use them if at all possible, for the reasons stated previously.

Take care of your data!

It is my understanding if you are on a company computer, the head monkey has access to anything you put on it.  ????

Your understanding is correct.  Company Computers have a company Administrator account that can access anything in your user account on that computer.  If you save your data in Company file servers or cloud services (i.e. OneDrive, SharePoint, etc.) , obviously they have access to that as well.

I have a company laptop - I NEVER access personal data (email, web sites, music, etc.) from that laptop.

My rule of thumb: Move your personal data off the company computer ASAP.
